Moments after his motorcycle struck a 4-year-old girl, an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed the girl’s irate father after he allegedly attacked the officer, the Chicago Sun Times reports.
Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden identified the officer as a 43-year-old veteran of the Chicago Police. The officer was headed home on Saturday evening when the horrifying incident occurred.
As he was driving home, the officer says he saw a child unexpectedly run into the street. In order not to strike the girl directly, the cop jumped off his motorcycle, pulling it down on its side on the pavement. However, the motorcycle skidded and flipped, hitting the 4-year-old girl and her 18-year-old cousin, John Passley.
As the officer attempted to provide aide to the girl, her father, identified as Christopher Middleton, 26, came running out of a nearby restaurant and aggressively approached the officer and began shouting, officials said. The cop argues that he identified himself as a police officer but Middleton still hit him in the face and knocked him to the ground before striking him repeatedly.

So, the real story is that a middle age man (43 year veteran in the police dept.) with a broken leg and shoulder is attacked by 2 young African-Americans (18 and 26 years old). About to lose consciousness, he shoots and mortally injures the 26 year old! Anybody want to guess the race of the cop?
That must have been later in the article, but, wow...
that’s a completely different story than the excerpt.
The man seems to have made every effort to avoid hitting the kids, was attacked, and rather than let himself be killed, uses his sidearm to defend himself.

This is an echo of the Travon Martin - George Zimmerman case where an unnecessary beating (possibly race-based) leads to a fatal shooting.
For sure, it is totally misleading.
It’s not very clear what the reporter was attempting to report on, the actions to save a child from extreme bodily injury or an off duty cop is attacked by two angry people. Would anyone care to take a guess as to the race of the cop??? Surprise,,,it’s in Chicago.

Middleton’s sister, Tina Middleton, said her brother lived in Elgin with the mother of his daughter and was visiting relatives in Maywood, where he grew up. “He was a good person,” she said. “I know for sure he wasn’t out to harm the man. My brother would never harm anybody. I could understand him [the officer] being upset, but two wrongs don’t make a right.”
Not to speak out of turn, but both you and I are making an assumption as to the state of mind of the father. This assumption, of course, is based on past experience and other related incidents where race was involved.
So the Dad is in the restaurant while his 4 year old little girl is running into the street.
I’ve had kids run out of the house before when my back was turned. But at that age, I always knew exactly where they were when we were at a restaurant.

The old saying “if it bleeds it leads” comes to mind.
The headline will be above the fold on the front page and the details will be on page 11 buried in commercial adverts.
If it were me, my first concern would be my daughter.
If the cop really dumped the motor to avoid the child good for him.
And why was a child crossing the street while dad was in an eatery?
Kane County court records show that Middleton completed supervision satisfactorily on a 2006 misdemeanor charge of resisting an Elgin police officer. DuPage County court records seem to show Middleton being sent to prison in 2005 for a theft/receiving stolen goods felony.

He’s a 43 year veteran, making him over 60, I would think.
As a fellow motorcycle rider, I applaud this officer for such a quick-thinking and gutsy move to try and protect the little girl - wow!
I don't know if Chich-fil-A can 'do' Chicago Values - all that killing would take too much time away from making chicken...
