Imagine Tea Party extremists seizing control of a South Carolina town and the Army being sent in to crush the rebellion. This farcical vision is now part of the discussion in professional military circles.
At issue is an article in the respected Small Wars Journal titled Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A Vision of the Future.

I guess the real question is how do we identify the officers that pose a threat to our domestic self-government and get rid of them?
Somehow I don’t think that will work as lawless president will no doupt fire every officer that refuses until such time that he finds one that will.
That is after all what Lincoln did, either we have a failed Constitutional republic or a standing army really is as big a threat to our freedom as any foreign enemy could ever pose.
I’m starting to think we would be better off letting the U.S. Army collapce, and all theses traitorous officers to find work among the people, and the patriots among them in their State national guards where State & local leaders will uses their control over officer selection to get rid of any would be traitor.
A distinction without a difference.
Who is "we"?
And it's not really a threat but...
Then, some years later, they'll start "The Hunger Games".
...you’re in!
” - - - I wonder if Obama will execute a pre-emptive strike?”
Well, lemme see now, Obama flunked Kindergarten, so he is a tad shy of the Little Gray Cells. Which could explain why he always uses a teleprompter to read the commie scripts from Comrades Axelrod and Jarrett.
But I digress - - - .
Obama has his Obamadrones poised to penetrate picture perfect flyover country homes.
Obama has two personal Corporate jets, complete with Jet Fighter support, and thus could drop pretty propaganda on Peoria, or Pasadena.
Mayor Rham Noodle Guy will Control Chicago, Fluke will “administer” Food Stamp relief, and well, Obama did say that “everybody deserves a fair shot.”
What happens if a President over steps the implied powers of the Constitution, names himself/herself Emperor, is aided by a spineless complicit Congress as well as Supreme Court Justices whose attitude are that “elections have consequences, who cares about Constitutional limitations” and issues orders to shoot all who oppose him/her on site?
To imply this a couple of months ago would be foolish, but based on Roberts “logic”, the Constitution is trumped by the policy’s of Presidents and Congress who have won popularity contests.
Lol, a tube of KY, copy of Playgirl, and a vibrating dildo would neutralize the military in about 10 years.
I have yet to see Afghan stabilized, lol. You expect the military to control say, 100,000,000 guns owners easily? I don’t care if they ate 50 years old, a bullet is a bullet no matter the age of the person shooting.
Very good description of where Benson came from, what he is doing now and how it relates to what the U.S. Army is up to.
Where it goes off the rails is in some of the comments on the article. I think that this was a boneheaded decision on Benson’s part and will tell him so. But, its useful to force a discussion on what’s going on within the Administration vice what academic chatter may be going on within the Army. Be very concerned about what the Administration is doing, don’t get too concerned about what’s going on here on the banks of the Missouri.
Imagine hit and run attacks, ambushes, destruction of rail and telegraph lines, bridges destroyed, warehouses burned, torpedoes (mines) set adrift in the rivers, snipers just waiting for you to let your guard down for an instant, and a hundred other terrors. How would the people of the North reacted if hundreds or thousands of young men simply disappeared without a trace to be buried in distant unmarked graves. Having buddies snatched from their tents at night, their throats slit while on sentry duty, or ambushed while on patrol with little or no way of striking back would be devastating to Union morale. Add Confederate cavalry raids deep into Union territory by such leaders as Forrest, Morgan, Mosby, and Stewart, burning and looting as they go.
The final outcome of such a conflict would depend on the resoluteness of the people on both sides of the conflict. Would the citizenry of the South be willing to endure hardships and brutal retaliation to preserve their ideals and their way of life, and would the people of the North be willing to endure similar hardships from raids that devastate their crops and savage their local infrastructure?
The historical records indicate that many in the South would have willingly endured such hardships for the Cause, while the North was divided on whether to support Lincoln's war or not. Would such raids have hardened Union resolve to see the war through to the bitter end or would they have resulted in protest and outcry similar to the New York Draft Riots?
My personal thought is that such a campaign would have succeeded in forcing the Union to the negotiating table. A prime example of this type of warfare is the East Africa Campaign of World War One. German General Graf Paul Emil Von Lettow-Vorbeck had fewer than ten thousand men (one thousand warriors and nine thousand porters and support personnel) yet he managed to run rings around the vastly larger British, Belgian, and Portuguese forces. Often outnumbered ten-to-one, Von Lettow-Vorbeck had his command divided into company sized units so that the Allies could not wipe him out in a single engagement. Notoriously low on supplies for most of the war, Von Lettow-Vorbeck would stage raids deep into enemy territory to capture arms and equipment. When the war ended, he was actually staging an offensive campaign into British territory when he was informed of Germany's surrender. The German people were enraptured by his force's exploits, to the point of giving them a victory parade through Berlin so celebrate the only German forces who did not surrender during the war.
Kentucky and Missouri saw a little of this type of warfare, but this was generally disorganized and not officially sanctioned by the Confederate government or military. Even then it created such chaos that vast numbers of troops were tied up defending the Union extreme rear from small handfuls of men with improvised equipment and no outside support.
Sorry if this answer rambles a bit, but I'm running on just a few hours sleep. I just wanted to get my thoughts typed out before I stumble off to bed.

Maybe someone should tell these paper pushers that we are currently being invaded by Mexico. How about coming up with a plan to save California and Arizona ?
I dont think that they would let him get too far with this little plan of his.
I think you're right, but just how certain can we be?
Very true. In that spirit (and appropriate to the thread), here's a little something I received in email yesterday:
Drafting Guys Over 60
"I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing ass-backwards.
Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.
For starters, researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.
Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry.' We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for awhile..
An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10am. Old guys always get up early to pee, so what the hell. Besides, like I said, I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.
If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.
Boot camp would be easier for old guys.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.
They could lighten up on the obstacle course however... I've been in combat and never saw a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.
Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too... I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.
An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head.
These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.
Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons, who know that their best years are already behind them.
HEY!! How about recruiting Women over 50...in menopause!!! You think MEN have attitudes?? Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!! If nothing else, put them on border patrol. They'll have it secured the first night!"
If you ever lower your ping profile standards, let me know so that I can apply to be on your ping list.
Who is Henry Bowman?
And those Afghani’s are mostly illiterate tribals. Their only real advantage is that they know their terrain and have networks inside which they can move contraband under the noses of the occupying force.
In addition to your scenario of millions of men with modern military training with modern small arms and add to them thousands of devious engineers with the ability to make modern civilization stop on a dime. Think about what little it would require to take down the US electrical grid for real. Think about how little it would take to turn a modern refinery into a roman candle. A few tracers lobbed in from a half-mile away... and stuff gets real sloppy, real quick.
The economy suddenly goes down a deep, dark hole, not to return for possibly a decade.
Pretty hard to finance a war on borrowed money when the lenders see little chance of being repaid any time soon.
