Went to the local PO today, saw the flag at half-mast and asked the manager why. I was thinking, oh dear we have lost another good soldier to that abysmal war!
She hesitated then said that Obama had ordered the flag flown at half mast to honor the Sikh dead from the temple shooting on Sunday.
I was stunned.
Did we even fly the flags at half mast in 2009 when that Muslim psychiatrist shot our unarmed troops?

If the guv’s order isn’t egregious enough by itself, the coroner is still waiting for toxicology reports on the deceased man’s tissue samples for traces of drugs or alcohol since there was no other obvious cause of death. What’s next?

Not exactly definitive. As Captain Barbosa would say, “the code is more what you’d call “guidelines” than actual rules.”
I served 21 years in the Marines. It was always "staff" on base.
Okay, I did find something.
4USC Chap 7, Position and Manner of Display, refers repeatedly to half staff. There is no mention at all in the code of half mast.
So, I stand by my original comment. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things. :-)
