A Louisiana teachers union is threatening private schools with legal action if they accept money from a new voucher program – and the threat has already forced at least one school to put its participation in the program on hold.
The demand was sent a few weeks ago by law firm representing the Louisiana Association of Educators and several other interests, and it argues the state-approved program is illegal because participating schools would be receiving an unconstitutional payment of public funds.
The two-page letter further states if schools don’t agree, then the law firm has “no alternative” than to take legal action.
“Our clients have directed us to take whatever means necessary to prevent the unconstitutional transfer of public money,” wrote Brian Blackwell, of the firm Blackwell & Associates.

As someone who works hard and pays thousands for my children to attend private school in Louisiana, I am against this handout. I sacrificed and made the correct choices in my life so that I could pay for a private education for my kids. But, here comes RINO Bobby giving $8,500 to any low income student in a C graded or worse school to sit next to my child with nothing out of their parents pocket. Does anyone really think that this is going to motivate the parents to care about their kid’s education? Is something that’s given free of charge ever truly appreciated? Meanwhile the environment in my child’s school begins to resemble that of a public school.
Government money always comes with strings attached and once a private school receives a significant amount of government money, they can be lead around by the nose by that government. Tolerance education, diversity, etc. can all be a stipulation to the dollars. Jindal will not always be the governor of LA. God forbid a Dem get elected.
Now that private schools that have lower tuition know that there are kids out there with $8500 attached to them, what’s to stop the school from raising tuition to $8500? For the responsible families who’ve budgeted for this and can barely make $5000 per year, this is a screw job. They’ll pay up or be forced into the public school system if they can’t.
This is means tested. The middle class children get nothing out of it regardless of their public school’s performance. Failing school? T.S. if your household income is above 250% of poverty level.
Before you lambaste me as some sort of leftist, think about what I’ve posted and the poison that accompanies govt money. I pay tens of thousands in income taxes and property taxes($2500 goes to public ed). I take no government handouts. I pay thousands for my children to have a private education. And, now, there will be government handouts that allow kids to go to private school with nothing out of their parent’s pockets.
The poor don’t pay income taxes or property taxes, get free food, very discounted housing, welfare, free healthcare, free cell phones and on and on. And, now they get free PRIVATE education. At some point people are going to realize that free stuff isn’t going to motivate many to rectify their situation. Meanwhile the rest of us bust ass for half the year just to earn in real income an amount that equals all of the government handouts given to the sloths.
It’s sickening. Why bother?

You’re right. I can see that one of the strings attached to the money is that the private school has to take anyone with a voucher. I can also see private schools popping up just because of the vouchers. I can also see current private schools, especially the Christian schools, simply refusing to accept any voucher students.
Proof that Unions are communists inspired. And these teachers are teaching our children.

Interestingly, the Christian schools are accepting dozens or more in many instances. I feel for the parents scratching to afford $5000 in tuition. Now that a school of say, 250 students adds 100 of the voucher kids, how long will it be before the school raises tuition to the voucher max of $8,500 and runs their middle income students off to the failing public school?
Govt money always causes prices to go up. Just look at what govt money did to the cost of healthcare through medicare/medicaid. Just look at what govt money did to the cost of college tuition with all of it’s easy money loans and various grants.

Although Louisiana law is unique in many areas, I just don’t see how the teachers’ union would have standing. Even if it did, I do not see how the schools receiving the vouchers in good faith can be the object of the suit.
It would be like Ralph Kramden’s union suing over subsidies for private taxi cabs.
I wonder if those Christian schools are receiving more for the voucher kids than the paying kids. I also wonder how long it will be before the state starts telling them what they have to teach, what books they have to use, what class sizes must be, what they can serve for lunch, and most importantly, that they can no longer teach about Christianity.
Exactly. This may be well intentioned by Jindal but it’s short-sighted. Once the dense libs see what a useful tool it is, this will spread and they’ll be able to crush Christian schools by slowly getting them addicted to and reliant on govt cash.
Taste that govt cheese and SNAP!!! Diversity training, American atrocity day, homosexual appreciation day, and cross-dress day, among other less obvious progressive shaping all potentially become a requirement to receive the now depended upon cash.

P.S. It’s a wonder that private universities have avoided the government mandates from taking money from the GI bill and Pell grants.
Private universities are plenty liberal and preach the “progressive” party line on their own. Even the more Religious universities such as Georgetown, Notre Dame, Boston College are all spewing “social justice” in all common curriculum type classes. Govt. need not demand anything as they are voluntarily compliant.
That’s why Hillsdale is so proud of taking no government money. they don’t toe that progressive line.
Yes. The student must not have a household income greater than 250% of the poverty line. The private school cannot test the student for admission. There is a lottery and you get who you get. A family of 4 who make about 75K per year will be told tough crap, your parents make too much, you stay in the public school while the shiftless parents kids get up to $8,500/year X 12 years!!!
That’s a $102,000 over a 1st -12th grade education. Multiply that by 3-4 kids for an unmarried, slothful government leech and you’re looking at $408,000. Nice deal if you’re poor enough, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, my kid, with me shelling out thousands, now gets to sit next to a child who will likely reflect his/her dysfunctional home life in the classroom.
