Milwaukee gun range voluntarily reports law-abiding customers to local police

Wisconsin -(Ammoland.com)-Wisconsin Carry has learned of some concerning information that we would like to pass along to our membership and right-to-carry interested folks in southeast Wisconsin.

In a recently published Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article which you can read here

It was reported that the former Badger Guns (now Brew City Shooters Supply) http://www.brewcityshooterssupply.com/ has, since 2009, been reporting the names of every customer that comes in to use their firing range to the West Milwaukee Police Department.

In this time over 25,000 customer names were reported to West Milwaukee Police Chief Dennis Nasci who ran a background check on each through “his system”.

So far in 2012 it was reported more than 8,800 customer name records have been supplied to West Milwaukee Police by Brew City Shooters Supply to have a criminal background check run on them.

We do not know yet, how else West Milwaukee Police have been using these records they have been given by Brew City Shooters Supply, nor if they are storing those customer names for future reference. We also do not know what other purposes West Milwaukee Police might choose to use these customer name lists for in the future.

So hows the next book coming along? :)

Looking forward to it. BTW, I did enjoy Castigo Cay. Not looking forward to life on the mainland WHEN it comes to pass, but we may have some BITS before that happens. I'm rooting for the American People to short circuit that first .

I smell a VERY expensive lawsuit brewing here... Against the City of Milwaukee, the Police Department, AND the business owner.

Sounds like the ‘new’ owner wanted to play nice with the local PD and try to get the heat off him from the Badger Guns/Outdoors stigma.

BTW, this is West Milwaukee a postage stamp size municipality almost entitely inside the city limits of Milwaukee.

I don’t have a problem with them turning over names to the local PD per se as long as it clearly posted in their shop and waivers you usually have to sign and everyone knows they do this. Let the marketplace decide.

"Three words: Class Action Lawsuit."

Two words: criminal charges.
It is a federal crime to use the NCIC background check system in the manner described.

The Smith and Wesson gun range was shut down in Springfield MA because it was found that some of the walk ins were, indeed, felons.

Now I have to practice my pistol at the outdoor range, ten more miles away.

I would want to know that the dates of record run is the same or close to the date of range time. This could be a good way to track someone for personal purposes, which is a felony.

This is a violation of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) policy. They have no business using this for such a fishing expedition.

A formal complaint needs to be raised, and escalated through a Congressional representative, demanding an NCIC audit of the use of the system by the WMPD. They should lose their access to the system.

And, oh yeah, sue them.

TNB, the next book, is the 2nd Dan Kilmer novel. I hope it’s ready in less than a year.

A lawsuit is in order. The customers had a right to expect privacy of their names. I would bet there are local laws about conducting investigations of persons not related to a crime as well, so sue the police.

I wondered why a gun shop owner would voluntarily adopt a policy so likely to destroy his business.

Maybe the owner thinks he can be charged with a crime or face a lawsuit if a criminal does his practice and warmups at his range.

I am even more upset this morning than I was when I read this last night. I am PO’d and have no idea what can be done. I mean, the info was already given. My name, address, my gun (I bought it there) is all there.

Sounds like the creation and maintenance of an arbitrary database - a big no-no. That needs to be looked into, and closely.

Heads should certainly roll on this one.

Get that resume ready boys, and remember, gun owners will make sure your record is made public information.

Rotsa ruck assholes!

These guys should be barred from working in law enforcement in the future.

It happens more than you think.

I have seen it many times, where the local police walk in with a gun and ask the store owner if he sold, and if so who did he sell it to.

Where I used to live, I asked a guy why he did that. The owner said if he didn’t, his license would not be renewed.

So was the Police Chief demanding the info? If so, is there a local ordinance that gives him that authority? In my state he’d be prohibited from keeping such a file. Sounds to me like a chief is heading for retirement.
