(Updated) The war on milk has shifted fronts. First it was sugar-laden chocolate milk, which parents and school administrators battled in recent years to remove from school-lunch menus. Now, its plain old moo thats under fire.
On Thursday, a national doctors group petitioned the U.S. government to remove milk as a required food group from the National School Lunch Program, the federally assisted program that has provided lunch to millions of public school kids since 1946. The doctors reasoning: milk doesnt help protect kids bones.
The promotion of milk to help build strong bones in kids is, in effect, the promotion of an ineffective placebo, writes the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in its petition [PDF]. Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein all of which counters its purported benefits to bone health, the committee argues.
The PCRM notes that dairy products, including milk, are the No. 1 source of saturated fat in Americans diets. Drinking milk for the calcium it contains is therefore a losing strategy, especially since people can get their daily recommended calcium from other, more nutritious foods. And for millions of Americans who are allergic to milk including 1.3 million children or intolerant to the lactose it contains, drinking milk carries potentially severe health risks.
One of the only reasons people talk about dairy, or promote it at all, is because it is going to help build strong bones, says Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the PCRM. Research has now made it abundantly clear that milk doesnt build strong bones. Whether we are talking about children who are forming bones or older people who are trying to keep their bone integrity, milk doesnt have a beneficial effect on either one.

Wonder if they have ties to Fenton Communications, which serves to carry out scare campaigns [remember the alar apple scare?] on behalf of special interest groups seeking to change the public perception of a given product not because of concenrs but to boost some product they are selling by hurting competition.
Ben and Jerry's hired Fenton to generate the milk hormone scare.
MOOYLENT GREEN ARE COWS!!!!!!
“How much of this has to go on before an absolute majority of parents say, Enough...”
...it’s getting worse. My wife is a pre-school teacher and the parents use the 4 hours of free time for manicures and shopping. They have zero regard for what the kid eats or drinks. It’s even worse in public school. Parents are “hopey, changey” zombies.
Especially when accompanied by an Oreo cookie ;-)
Soy milk contains a bunch of phytoestrogens, and god only knows what us in coconut milk and almond milk is no doubt going to cause severe allergy in some people.
I know take chalk dust and mix with water, that’s the ticket!
Exactly. Saying that consuming the primary source of calcium in most people's diet contributes to the formation of calcium-based structures such as bones is simply absurd. That's as irrational as claiming that the sun has more effect on temperatures on earth than SUVs have. Science today is nothing like it was when I was young and they worried too much about "experimental evidence" and other outmoded concepts.
>>Gee, wonder if PCRM has any real doctors in it..
Oh, yes. 5% of the membership. That includes psychiatrists and such and there is some question about what they require as credentials from the ‘doctors’.
>>Wonder if they have ties to Fenton Communication...
I think they are genuine fanatics but might also be useful idiots being manipulated for financial gain.
Wonder if they pass out free lab coats at their gatherings?
And they now say meat products, milk products and oils are what cause health problems.
They don’t use chalk anymore, because chalk dust creates an unsafe environment for students (and unionized teachers/staff) with asthma or other breathing products. Fumes from dry-erase markers are also a problem, leading to a huge demand for “smart-boards,” on which they can all watch videos all day.
You don’t want to take on the dairy lobby.
These guys have managed to have minimum pricing on milk SET BY THE STATE here in Pennsylvania since the 1930’s. They could make an elected politician’s life REEEEEEEEEEEAL miserable if he or she screws with them.
My ex-SIL was full of this milk is bad for you crap. She fed her children soy and vegan and very little meat. Her daughter, my niece, was skiing and ran into another skiier. She broke her thigh bone, among others, was in a half body cast for months. When I, a milk drinker, was about the same age as niece, I fell off of a 20+ foot deer stand and didn’t break a bone. I was pretty bruised up, but jumped up and walked back to camp.
The term “Nanny State” should have long ago been changed to “Nazi State”.
I thought that was eggs. Or was that a later iteration of "nature's most perfect food?" BTW, eggs are next on the hit list.
True though PA is now one of the few states where you are allowed to walk into a store and purchase raw milk despite the efforts of the dairy lobby.
I would guess so. Most of the planet is lactose intolerant.
The use of that has really gotten out of control. It's so bad it falls from the sky.
So for hundreds of thousands of years, we had it wrong. How dumb we were not to notice in all that time that milk was bad for us. Praise Gaia for the progressives who finally set
us straight!
A slurry of crushed Chinese drywall and Chinese cabbage juice will be the 0bamaCare approved diet.
If you don't stop thinking that will simply be a forced economic decision, right now!, you will have to go to a re-education camp, right winger.
