'Dark Knight Rises' shooting: Three heroes died in Aurora taking bullets for their girlfriends
New York Daily News ^ | 21 July 12 | Judith Crosson , Kerry Wills and Bill Hutchinson

Three survivors of the Colorado movie-theater massacre escaped with minor wounds, but were left with broken hearts because their heroic boyfriends died saving them.

In final acts of valor, Jon Blunk, Matt McQuinn and Alex Teves used their bodies to shield their girlfriends as accused madman James Holmes turned the Aurora cineplex into a shooting gallery.

Blunk’s girlfriend, Jansen Young; McQuinn’s girlfriend, Samantha Yowler; and Teves’ gal pal Amanda Lindgren made it out of the bloodbath — but they would have been killed had it not been for the loves of their lives.

“He’s a hero, and he’ll never be forgotten,” a tearful Jansen Young told the Daily News of Blunk. “Jon took a bullet for me.”

She was too distraught to speak more, but her mother called Blunk, 25, who had two young children from a previous relationship, “a gentleman.”

“He was loving, the kind of guy you want your daughter to be with, and ultimately, she’s alive because of this, because he protected her,” Shellie Young said.

She said Blunk, a security guard, had served in the Navy and had recently filled out papers to reenlist with a goal of becoming a Navy SEAL. “To her, he was a hero anyway because he wanted to serve his country,” she said of her daughter, who was left with shrapnel wounds to her side. “He said that all the time: ‘I was born to serve my country.’”

This is a strange tribute to the three men because it really focuses on only one of them, Jon Blunk, and, in the process, airs his dirty laundry in public.

When we read yesterday about the cowardly Jamie Rohrs--the punk who abandoned his girlfriend, their baby, and her little daughter--many people noted that this young couple's behavior was disturbing evidence of the breakdown of the family in a me-centered generation.

So, sadly, is Jon Blunk's story. The girlfriend he rescued already has two little kids "from a previous relationship," and she thrust her affections (and her phone number) on the still-married Jon Blunk, who had left behind his wife and two small kids in another state. He was unquestionably a hero for saving his new girlfriend's life in that theater, but I doubt his small son and daughter will display this article proudly to their friends later on in life.

I understand there were others in the theater in other/ batman costumes. One of them was getting in people’s faces and frightening them.

How did the shooter exit the theater? Still in the gas mask and with weapons? With other people?

If the police were there, why didn’t they just drop him there?

Because everyone knows that body armor is ineffective against projectiles fired by well meaning people.

Did James Holmes have body armor covering his face and head?

The world must be pretty simple when you live in your mom’s basement. Want another Hot Pocket while you play your X-box.....

You really need to grow up and drop the juvenile attitude.

Definitely a complication, but don’t you allow for the possibility that someone might have been right near the guy and able to get a few shots off quickly?

It seems to me that the scumbag was targeting the women

I think you are right about that. The scumbag certainly did have "women" issues. The only way he seemed to be able to relate to one was through porno.

Seriously. What kind of man posts something like this with their name on it?

Porn dehumanizes women and men; and this guy was so evil he shot a 6 year old girl.

> Is that how the killer entered the theater carrying his weapons?

Yup. According to accounts I’ve read, he bought a ticket, then went out one of the safety exits and left the door jimmied open enough so that he could re-enter through the same exit. He went out to his car, got all his equipment, returned through the exit he had left jimmied open and started shooting.

The theater chain is going to have a lot of ‘splainin’ to do, since those exits are supposed to alarm the ushers if they are opened during the show. The alarms are disabled at the end of the show to allow the audience to leave through them, but the alarms were probably left disabled. Very stupid, not to mention bad business sense, since anybody could let their buddies enter for free.

And return fire has a way of taking the ‘courage’ out of these guys!

You don't think the cops were actually going to go in do you?

Remember the photos of them creeping up to the school after another massacre, and the gunmen had already killed themselves.

Sorry to say, it seems the Police has been so neutered that they are only capable of shooting dogs.

I’m not sure it was teargas - some have heard it was just smoke. (Just like the utility vest is being called armor). And one witness said he was just standing there, methodically shooting with no emotion.

All this talk about shoot or not shoot - seems to me that if you aren’t going to TRY to shoot in a situation like this, you might as well just leave your gun in the vault. Although I got to say - I couldn’t make a head shot at 20 yards, even on a guy standing still. Well - at least not with my pistol.

Yes.

What I was responding to is the claim of some of "Had I been there....." crowd. Since one could not guarantee that they would have been 'right near the guy', their claims , based on the situation, are ludicrous. In the commotion, would you risk shooting innocent bystanders ?

YOU FIGHT BACK.

And apparently, according to this article, some did. Even though they didn't have guns.

It would have been nice if someone in the theater had a fully loaded weapon, and had been able to use it to kill this mass murderer.

Apparently, again, no one did.

You can make all the claims about your 'heroism' that you want, yet you were not in the movie theater.

Would you have taken a bullet to protect your wife/girlfriend ?

Once you have been in the same exact situation, then proudly tell us what you 'did'.

My big gripe was with the “he has body armor so it’s pointless to resist” flavor I got from the earlier post. I know what you mean about the “if only” Rambos out there, but I sure wish someone in that theater, other than the killer, had said “to hell with the rules.” And yes, I would probably risk it if I thought I could make the shot. There’s always the possibility of a miss or pass through, but if you think you can make the shot and the alternative is to sit by and watch others be murdered, I think I would feel almost obligated to try and stop it. Or maybe I’d run; there’s probably no way to know until you’re there. Still, unless you’re right at the exit your odds of getting plugged are pretty good anyway, so there is the element of self-preservation at work and you’d have to live with yourself either way. I don’t know if it would be harder to live with stopping an attack but killing an innocent or letting the whole thing unfold. The problem is that either way you’ll never know how it would have come out had you acted otherwise. Killing an innocent and failing to stop the attack would be pretty difficult to survive. In the end it’s too bad several people couldn’t have rushed him. It seems like there were people brave enough to take bullets trying to protect others, but they just didn’t have the means to get at the SOB.

even with all that he gets redemption...he deserves it

and his kids he abandoned will be left with more of a deceased ideal than a living problem

maybe they will do better

O.M.G. An honest and realistic response. Do you know how rare that is?

May I suggest that it is more likely that someone like you would step up and be the hero, rather than all the "if only" Rambos, who would be , in reality, crapping their pants while they trampled others trying to get to the doors.

"And if there's one thing I don't like, it's a p#$$? with a gun."
