Road Trip: Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is a United States military facility adjacent to Honolulu, Hawaii. It is an amalgamation of the former United States Air Force Hickam Air Force Base and the United States Navy Naval Base Pearl Harbor, which were merged in 2010.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is part of Navy Region Hawaii and provides Navy and joint operations Base Operating Support that is capabilities-based and integrated.

As part of Pacific Air Forces, the United States Air Force 15th Wing provides strategic and tactical airlift capability to PACAF and Air Mobility Command operating the C-17 Globemaster III. It also enhances PACAF's power and reach operating the F-22 Raptor.
 

 

Naval Station Pearl Harbor provides berthing and shore side support to surface ships and submarines, as well as maintenance and training. Pearl Harbor can accommodate the largest ships in the fleet, to include dry dock services, and is now home to over 160 commands. Housing, personnel, and family support are also provided and are an integral part of the shore side activities, which encompasses both permanent and transient personnel.

Because Pearl Harbor is the only intermediate maintenance facility for submarines in the Middle Pacific, it serves as host to a large number of visiting submariners.

The Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Pacific, (NCTAMS PAC), Wahiawa, Hawaii is the world's largest communication station. The headquarters site of this shore command is located in the central section of the island of Oahu, approximately three miles north of Wahiawa.
 

Hickam Air Force Base was named in honor of aviation pioneer Lt Col Horace Meek Hickam. It is under the jurisdiction of Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), which is headquartered on the base.

Hickam remains the launch point of strategic air mobility and operational missions in support of the Global War on Terrorism as well as special air missions in support of the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) and Commander, Pacific Air Forces (PACAF).

Hickam is home to the 15th Wing (15 WG) and 67 partner units including Headquarters, United States Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), Headquarters - Hawaii Air National Guard and the 154th Wing (154 WG) of the Hawaii Air National Guard. The Air Mobility Command's 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing (515 AMOW) provides tactical and strategic airlift within the Pacific region.

At Pearl Harbor-Hickam the 15th Airlift Wing retains essentially unchanged missions for the 15th AW operations, maintenance and medical groups -- along with its core mission functions of Airfield Operations and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. Also unaffected due to the merge were the many other supported units and tenants on the joint base -- Pacific Air Forces, Air Mobility Command, 13th Air Force and our Total Force partners in the Hawaii Air National Guard.

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor on historic Ford Island occupies World War II-era hangars that still bear the scars of our nation's first aviation battlefield. It's the newest attraction among the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites and a must visit for aviation and history enthusiasts.

Ford Island, now a National Historic Landmark, is quiet today but it still shows the scars of war. In developing the master plan in the 1990s, the Navy consulted with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Hawaii Foundation.

The Navy agreed to protect several historic buildings and nearby grounds. However, preserving these artifacts is outside the Navy's primary mission, so an innovative method for adaptive reuse and preservation was required.

Perhaps serendipitously, a group of concerned Hawaii citizens stepped forward with a solution and a plan to create a world class aviation museum in the historic hangars that survived the attack that initiated the US effort in World War II.

What’s The Trouble?

There was something wrong with my lawn. I couldn’t see what the trouble was, but I knew something was causing damage.

After investigating, I discovered the problem: moles. Those voracious little bug-eaters were crawling around just under the surface of my previously well-groomed lawn looking for food and wreaking havoc on my grass.

The children of Israel also had a problem with a hidden cause (Josh. 7). They were experiencing trouble, and they couldn’t figure out why. There was something hidden from their view that was causing serious damage.

The trouble became noticeable when Joshua sent 3,000 troops to attack Ai. Although that should have been a sufficient army to defeat Ai’s small force, the opposite happened. Ai routed the Israelites, killing 36 of them and chasing them back where they came from. Joshua had no idea why this trouble had come. Then God explained the hidden problem: One of his men, Achan, had violated a clear command and had stolen some “accursed things” from Jericho (Josh. 7:11). Only when that hidden sin was discovered and taken care of could Israel have victory.

Hidden sin does great damage. We need to bring it to the surface and deal with it—or face certain defeat.

in my heart. Reveal any areas of my life that are
not pleasing to You and forgive me. Amen.

Frank Bridge wrote a number of fantasies for piano and strings a century ago as part of a series of annual British competitions. Most of them won prizes.

Stefan Jackiw is a wonderful young violinist. At an open rehearsal several years ago, the pianist was late due to Seattle traffic, and Stefan entertained the crowd by playing the E Major Suite for Solo Violin by Bach. I just closed my eyes and went into a trance.

Cellist Robert deMaine is first chair cello with the Detroit Symphony and a talented composer. He has written a set of caprices for solo cello, and one of them is hilarious. In the piece, the muezzin issues the call to prayer from the mosque, beautifully stated by the cello, and the people respond with – a belly dance. I asked him how the people of Dearborn took it when he played the piece there, and he said they loved it. Some Arabs, at least, have a sense of humor.

Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances for 2 Pianos, Op. 45

Sergei Rachmaninov was the rare composer who understood both the artistic and business sides of music. When the October Revolution hit, Rachmaninov was best known as the leading conductor of Russian opera in the game. But Russian opera doesn’t travel very well. When he came to America in 1918, he was met at the dock in New York with telegrams for two job offers as music director of an orchestra: one from Cincinnati and the other from Boston. (The Boston slot was the job that Serge Koussevitsky took a few years later.)

Rachmaninov knew that it was not yet the era of the itinerant conductor. When you signed a contract with an orchestra, you were there for the whole year. But it was the tail end of the era of the great flamboyant pianist. Hoffmann, Lhevinne, Busoni, Gabrilowitz, Cortot, Carreño and others dominated the world’s concert halls. Rachmaninov took the year off, brushed up on his piano technique and signed with Edison Records in 1919. He quickly became the greatest pianist of the 20th Century, eclipsing his rivals. His piano concertos chased the existing Romantic piano concertos right out of the concert halls. When he signed with RCA Victor in 1927, he got a great deal and complete artistic control. He had homes in New Jersey and Beverly Hills.

In 1938, the pianist Arthur Rubinstein was living in Beverly Hills, and he was pleased to discover that both Rachmaninov and Igor Stravinsky were neighbors. He decided to arrange a dinner at his place where the two could finally meet. Rachmaninov and Stravinsky were of two different Russian generations. Sergei was the ultra-Romantic, and Igor was the firebrand avatar of new music. Rubinstein wondered if they would be able to stay in the same room and began to question his decision.

When the men arrived, both were wary and exquisitely polite.

Stravinsky began tentatively, “Sergei Vasilievich, have you had difficulties collecting your royalties from the Bolsheviks? The tsar’s government at least paid promptly, but I’ve had a hell of a time getting a single kopeck out of the current government.”

Rachmaninov relaxed, laughed deeply in his basso profundo voice and responded, “Igor Fyodorovich, those Communist sons of bitches have been robbing me blind for the past twenty years!”

And the two men became the best of friends.

This is Rachmaninov’s last piece, written both for orchestra and for a two piano arrangement for performance to his friends. It’s a showpiece.

Was stationed at Hickam 1964-65, in 1502nd MATS Wing.

Was a Crew Chief on an "Old Shakey" (C-124) at that time, the largest cargo plane in the USAF inventory

Yes, for you younguns, we used to fly around (actually "cruised" at about 150 mph) propeller driven planes.

Have fond memories of Hickam. Waikiki Beach (girl watching), Makapu Beach on the North Shore (Awesome body surfing) Fantastic Weather year around, which was welcomed for someone who worked out of doors (flight line) and a laid-back, fun place to be (albeit expensive) back then.

My Barracks was near the "10th Puka (hole) on the Golf Course and we used to go their for inexpensive burger and beers.

I also remember they had a real kool outdoor theater with seats within walking distance and if memory serves me, the costs was only .25 cents.

Left Paradise in Jan 66 for another "paradise" (Nam) and though I had volunteered was exited to get over there before the war was over (young, dumb and ....well you know the rest) was soon missing Oahau.

A special shout out to all my Nam Vet bros and sisters, our active duty and especially, those serving in Harms Way.
