I want to hear the silence on Saturdays in State College, Pa. I want to experience the hush of an empty stadium. I want to feel the emptiness as an institution serves its penance for putting a football program above the safety of young boys.
Silence in exchange for silence thats the price Penn State needs to pay for looking away as a sexual predator ruined lives.
The school needs to shut down its football program for at least two years. Or, if university officials cant quite locate their humanity, let the NCAA do it for them.
The Freeh Report came out Thursday, and its as damning and heartbreaking a document as youll ever read. It tells the story of a university so concerned with its reputation that it allowed children to be molested.
Please read that last sentence again. Its what this whole disgusting mess comes down to. Coach Joe Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley, school president Graham Spanier and vice president Gary Schultz let Jerry Sandusky sexually abuse boys for 14 years.
And for what? So the good name of a university would not be hurt. Excuse me while I vomit.
That good name and that university are so contaminated right now it would take workers in hazmat suits to clean it all up. In lieu of that, well have to settle for more realistic solutions:
Long prison terms for those who failed the children. Spanier, Schultz and Curley all of them in inmate coveralls.
The suspension of a football program for a school that knowingly allowed the abuse to continue for years.
The destruction of the campus statue honoring a coach who was more worried about protecting his programs reputation than protecting victims from a monster.

How about one year suspension for every year that Joe Paterno coached there.
Well said.
...and in the general population at Graterford, not some minimum security Fed Pen, thank you very much.
How about a year for each of the victims?
WOW! We should have more journalists like Rick Morrissey! Thank you for posting this.
IMHO, the football program should be shutdown for 8 years. The idea would be that not only the current group of students won’t see football anymore but the next groups that come in won’t see Penn State f-ball either and they will graduate as well and when it is reinstated, none of the current students except for several that may have been in school like this past school year and earlier would not know football as an institution at Penn State.
I know in the past there were fraternity and sorority houses shutdown for several years back when I was an undergrad to try to get rid of a reputation such as homosexuality. There was a sorority that was shutdown for almost 8 years at a college in Indy and they had a problem with lesbianism that got bad there.
Off tangent, I use to be a big fan of Indiana University basketball until Bobby Knight got fired but I sure hope none of this crap happened in the IU B-ball program.
The program should absolutely be shut down for a while, at least two years.
I don’t see the NCAA doing that. I don’t see Penn State doing that. It’s all about money.
If SMU deserved the death penalty for cheating, how much more does PSU deserve a punishment 10 times worse....
I want to add, it should be confirmed beyond a reasonable doubt that if Paterno was involved, anything related to him, his name should be stripped from the Penn State campus. Statue torn down, his name removed from the records there, if his name is on anything like buildings, rooms, etc, removed.
This should be confirmed by someone else independent of the former FBI director. That investigator should do a fresh investigation and not see the Freh (sp?) report)
Amen.
I think a year would only be a token gesture, willyd. The survivors will be dealing with the damage for the rest of their lives- & by extension, their families & friends.
I’m just sayin’ ...
[ In the silence of Saturdays, you might hear the faint screams of boys who had been looking for adults to rescue them. And found none. ]
I’m not so sure Penn State should ever have a football program again.
Bob Knight was set up by a group of liberals on the faculty.
The lawsuits will effectively kill PSU Football and PSU.
Well nice to be Judge, Jury and Executioner. Stop for a minute. Do any of you know what kind of environment Joe had to deal with in order to go about his job as a coach? As both a ‘Pennstater’ and one who lives here in SF, I am well aware that when something similar to this happens in the midst of Gomorrah everyone feigns shock and surprise, even though all along the environment fostered the inevitable outcome.
Get real America ! I am sure that Joe knew more than he would ever divulge but kept it to himself, based upon his Italian heritage and generation. He never dreamed about pursuing it beyond what he did, since vocalizing it further was simply hopeless in the happy valley environment.
The whole school should be shut down.
“Bob Knight was set up by a group of liberals on the faculty.”
Must have been quite a set up to force Knight to choke a player.
the buck stops at the presidents desk....he should be fired, if he's not already, fined, and banned from ncaa colleges for a few years....
paterno knew only peripherally about all this...he hoped against hope, like any decent man of his age, that it wasn't all bad, that the guy accused was well liked by players, and perhaps it would stop.. but also, Sandusky probably argues that it was nothing but horse play....
this was an impossible situation, brought about because we give homos so many passes....no one dare question them....
the freaks that invited the gay agenda into Penn state...the same University that got rid of a female bb coach because that coach didn't want lesbians playing for her.....those are the evil idiots I want sanctioned...
