(Reuters) - A powerful storm hit the U.S. capital on Friday, downing trees with wind gusts of up to 79 miles per hour, topping hurricane force levels and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the Washington area.
Bands of rain lashed the city and winds toppled power lines and littered the streets with tree limbs as the fast-moving storm, which started in the Midwest after a day of severe heat, reached Washington and its suburbs late in the evening.
WTOP radio said more than 800,000 people in the Washington area were without power.
The Washington Post said it had reports of winds gusting up to 79 miles per hour in Reston, Virginia.
There were power outages in several Washington Metro stations, the Post said, after a day of extreme heat across the southern and eastern United States.
A flash flood warning was issued in Fredrick County, Maryland, until 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, and severe storm warnings were issued in areas between Washington and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.
WUSA television in Washington said "thousands of trees" and tree branches were likely downed by the storm.

Thank you! Freepers are fine folk but have a tendency to be remarkably parochial.

No.
The recent court decision with ROBERTS changing sides was Bush’s fault.
THIS is God speaking to SCOTUS for approving The Marxist Muslim’s abortion mandating Statute.
The newer ones with the single hi-intensity lamp work well as emergency lights. They really aren't run for long periods of time and the 30 auto cut-off tends to extend battery life. Learned to use more lights rather than moving one light around. Have one in the utility room that is still on the set of batteries I put in 4 months ago. It doesn't run for more than the 2 or 3 mins it takes to do a visual check of equipment.
Charger cords - carry one for the smart phone, one for the netbook, and a spare car 12v adapter. Sometimes it seems like they take up more room than the netbook. ; >)
Occasionally I buy a bunch of the green chemical light sticks, kids love them when the lights go out.
Roberts fled to Malta "to teach". Malta should be rather nervous, especially after...
That kind of "joke" is just begging for seismic applause.
As Bugs would say, "What a maroon."
Power is still out.
My mother grew up in DC in the 1920’s and 1930s - before the wide spread use of air conditioning. She said DC had two seasons. When Congress was in session it was noisy and overcrowded. When Congress wasn't in session it was quite and very enjoyable.
Wonder - could we remove air conditioning from all governmental offices as both a cost saving and environmental effort?
We have no power north Balt Co.
Yes indeed. Thank you. Bethesda, MD reporting. Got ice at 5 this morning since I know we have the worst power company in the US. Made coffee over Sterno. Wife thinks I’m a genius (don’t say anything, ok?).
“Hey DC... I just wanted you to know that I am still alive and I am very unhappy with you”.
GOD
In other news, Chief Justice John Roberts opined that this was a weather tax.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Not a good morning to be on the road. All the traffic signals are out. People are already frustrated. Enjoy the cool morning, its going to get real hot soon and i have a feeling Its going to be a long day
Why didn't you just use your gas range?
Yeah, but the remaining 99% are corrupt bureaucrats, thieves and ghettoRATs.
Looks like a good time to break out the camping gear and take a little drive.
I used my gas drill to heat water for my coffee press during Isabel. Felt like a true pioneer, haha
Too bad a little more rain didn’t come with the wind.
We got the wind allright, but only a nickel’s worth of much needed rain.
Well, Rocky, you gave me my first real LOL of the day. I sure do miss the gas ranges we had back in NYC.
We endured the Great Ice Storm up here in Maine some years back...
Gas range, wood cookstove, pulled water from the well in buckets, plenty of chipped ice for coolers under the trees. It took over an hour to get 3/4” of ice off the cars.
Not falling down had its moments.
Our power just came back. Went out 10:00 last night. I’m 50 miles west of DC.
Yep. I was out driving and a lot of uncontrolled intersections. Be careful.
