(Reuters) - A powerful storm hit the U.S. capital on Friday, downing trees with wind gusts of up to 79 miles per hour, topping hurricane force levels and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the Washington area.
Bands of rain lashed the city and winds toppled power lines and littered the streets with tree limbs as the fast-moving storm, which started in the Midwest after a day of severe heat, reached Washington and its suburbs late in the evening.
WTOP radio said more than 800,000 people in the Washington area were without power.
The Washington Post said it had reports of winds gusting up to 79 miles per hour in Reston, Virginia.
There were power outages in several Washington Metro stations, the Post said, after a day of extreme heat across the southern and eastern United States.
A flash flood warning was issued in Fredrick County, Maryland, until 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, and severe storm warnings were issued in areas between Washington and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.
WUSA television in Washington said "thousands of trees" and tree branches were likely downed by the storm.

RE:”Being without power for a minute gave you a scare? What are you going to do when SHTF and theres no power at all?”
In hot humid weather like this find another place to stay
Mines been out for over 2 hours and still out
They know how to deal with real life problems...they were brought up to be self reliant. They will be the ones with the chain saws digging out the neighbors.

I used to live in the east but have been in the west for 35 yrs...I could not live in that humidity no matter what....hope things get better....

Sorry about that, do you have a generator for the refrigerator at least?
I am usually very lucky. All my lines are underground and in the past 10 years I only lost power for more than a minute or so once in Sept 2003 during that hurricane, and it was for 12 hours.
Are you posting from your phone?
I was driving home when it started. Debris was flying so fast onto the car. I was praying a pole or branch wasn’t next. Should have pulled over but I was only a half mile away and wanted to get home.
Obama leaves DC to go to Colorado for political posturing and rhetoric amid the wildfires. Meanwhile DC gets inundated with rain and now faces a severe health crisis in the heat and humidity with no electricity. Will Obama return, cut short his vacation or will this be his Katrina?
It wasn’t a storm it was a TAX.
Yes , thank goodness for cell service.
You’ve been lucky with your power situation, especially tonite. Seems everyone is out.

You got the picture. People here who claim they LOVE the heat then hide in AC 24-7 annoy me .
Déjà vu? I wonder if it spawned tornadoes like in the war of 1812 that scattered the British forces after they invaded and burned Washington DC to the ground.
Instead of the British suffering an act of God, now it's the beltway, DC Cong and Obama critters of corruption feeling the wrath. ;^)
I hope nothing happens to the politicians. They are our treasures.
If they are treasures, the only righteous thing to do then is to bury them where no one could ever find them.
we have one of the largest, if not THE largest 3on3 BB tournement going on starting tomorrow....over 27,000 players all ages in our downtown area.....so its good to have the cooler weather...
Yes,
My luck was buying my house in a new development at the time I did that has protected utility lines. My town has many areas that lose power all the time, they have above ground lines and lots of trees.
I only turnedthe AC down to 79F at after 9pm so my house was still uncomfortable when the power flashed. That would have been bad. It was near 100F today.
It was really windy here too, hail maybe, It was really noisy.
Cats should do the burying. Kitty-litter users know exactly how to deal with these “treasures”.
Maybe God has finally had enough.
