Lennon had a mordant lyrical gift that was reminiscent of Cole Porter or Larry Hart. The Lennon & McCartney mix added the mordancy of Lennon to McCartney's natural sweetness. It was a good mix.

"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a good example. There's a catchy tune and Lennon's lyrics about a serial killer.

Three people die in “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”: the girlfriend, the teacher and the judge. Killing the judge in the courtroom is something only a Brit could think of. It’s a Lennon masterpiece of lyric writing.

There was quite a bit of debate when “Norwegian Wood” came out. There was a consensus of sorts that it was about a hetero male and a lesbian having a non-sexual encounter that led to the male burning the lesbian’s furniture. Strange world.
