Lennon had a mordant lyrical gift that was reminiscent of Cole Porter or Larry Hart. The Lennon & McCartney mix added the mordancy of Lennon to McCartney's natural sweetness. It was a good mix.

"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a good example. There's a catchy tune and Lennon's lyrics about a serial killer.
