$5B CAMO SNAFU

NATICK, Mass. — The Army is changing clothes.

Over the next year, America’s largest fighting force is swapping its camouflage pattern. The move is a quiet admission that the last uniform — a pixelated design that debuted in 2004 at a cost of $5 billion — was a colossal mistake.

Soldiers have roundly criticized the gray-green uniform for standing out almost everywhere it’s been worn. Industry insiders have called the financial mess surrounding the pattern a “fiasco.”

As Army researchers work furiously on a newer, better camouflage, it’s natural to ask what went wrong and how they’ll avoid the same missteps this time around. In a candid interview with The Daily, several of those researchers said Army brass interfered in the selection process during the last round, letting looks and politics get in the way of science.

It was an idiot idea to try to find one camo pattern and shade that would work well in all environments from the Arctic to deserts to jungles to urban areas etc.

The best they could do was one bad camo pattern for everywhere.

You mean there is no such thing as “Universal” Camoflage? The colors that work well in the Desert don’t work so well in a woodlands, and those colors that work well in a tropical location don’t work so well in the Artic?

Who’d a thunk?

I’m not sure I believe any of this.

Seems like a convenient slam against the US and anything that sets us “unfairly” above “the rest of the world”.

This is good news for me. I do 3d simulations for the military and we have characters with the current uniforms. Once they decide on the new patterns, I’ll have to do a lot of updates.

I seem to remember a few of the new camo colors....

Desert colors, brown and white hues.
Green pixelated hues for jungles.....

Are we going to simply accept another Big Media headline story as truth?

The digitized camo is pretty ugly. I don’t see this as a slam against the US at all. From what I remember, they said black stands out because natural colors aren’t black, so really all they’d have to do, in my opinion, is redo the older camo without black. My favorite pattern were the desert BDU, though I do like the urban pattern as well. They could leave black in that one because there’s plenty of man-made things that are black.

They think it was a camo failure but the truth is, Obama was leaking their positions

The Army should bring back at least some earlier dress styles, none made in China. And get rid of these faggy berets!

The obvious question is: Which member of Congress had a spouse/child working at the company which was ultimately awarded the contract to produce the pixelated camo product?

Most of the troopies in Afghanistan seem to have already switched to the new Multicam pattern.

Yep, politics ruins everything good and puts lives in danger!

The current army policy has bent on the absurd velcro name tapes and pin on specialty badges but still insists on the velcro unit tabs and patches. Everytime you walk down a tight hallway, you trade patches with those you bump into.

The policy STRICTLY PROHIBITS sewing a multi-cam swath with unit patches sewn on in an effort to cover up the “pile” part of the “hook and pile” (apparently, “velcro” is a trademarked term).

That uniform was a disaster from jump. They looked like Hasbro kids pajamas and fit about the same way. Velcro just might be the loudest industrial solution to effectively closing a pocket ever invented. NOT helpful while on patrol.

the right way to do it would be to put chevrons back where they belong: on the sleeves of the NCO’s that earned them - big and bold. A-stan is a squad leader’s war. those chevron’s ought to be located where Soldiers can easily identify it.

And I realize the explanation that will undoubtedly appear: They shrunk so the enemy can’t easily identify them.

Thos fecal commandos deserve a little more credit than that. They figure out pretty quick who’s in charge.

The sooner the glow in the dark ACUs go the way of the black beret, the better off the army will be.

RLTW.

$5 billion for new camo? A perfect example of how costly Govt in the USA has become.

Many will point out that the USA supposedly outspends rivals such as China by 10 or 20 times. But do you think China spends $5 billion on new camo for its troops?

I use a combination of coyote tan and Swiss Alpenflage for the inland northwestern woodlands. Inexpensive and readily avaailable. Highly effective.
