College football will finally have a playoff. Come 2014, the BCS is dead.
A committee of university presidents on Tuesday approved a plan for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the major football conferences.
''It goes just the right amount,'' he said.
The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champion after years of griping from fans.
''There were differences of views,'' Steger said. ''I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp.''
Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a championship game after the regular season, the way the Bowl Championship Series has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

Only 50 or 75 years late...
As an LSU fan... Geaux NCAA!
The PC crowd may well force the end of football as we know it.
Sorry but I see this as exploiting the student-athletes time and bodies for more money and not for betterment of students, colleges or traditional bowls.
Most of us did not care 50 years ago though, but many do care now.
"The new system is horrible and needs to be replaced!" -- Head Coach Team #5
Yeah, now the SEC can get four of their teams in there instead of 2 every year.
I will believe the corruption has been taken out when there are NO SEC teams in the playoff.
We’ll see how excited everyone is when the SEC has two or three teams in the playoff... every year.
How about a 256 team playoff? We can use Division I, II and III teams. We start the playoffs in September and by August of the next year we are down to the final game
Why on earth would you say such a thing? We have the best teams in the country here in the SEC. Just because USC sucks doesn’t mean you have to be a hater
The BCS grew to four bowl games plus the National Championship Game consisting of six conference champions and four wild cards. The new system will consist of six bowl games consisting of four selected semi-finalists and a spot for at least five conference champions.
Less has changed than what meets the eye. But at least there will be a true playoff.
A four team playoff? What?
Will bowl games continue?
LOL. True dat.
Each conference has two divisions (32 div. Champs)>
Conference championship game is essentially round one.
16 teams left
Only conference champions move on into the "Bowl" games that qualify for the final four teams.
If you cannot win your conference, you cannot be the Champ.
Season would be extended to 14 games for only two teams.
Should be a 16 yeam playoff. 11 conference champs, 5 at large. The SEC can still get 3 in and CUSA and MWC etc with 1- 2 losses has a shot

All those kids care about is getting to the NFL anyway (even though few actually make it).
After reading Tebow’s book, I can see how small a part academics plays in the life of NFL bound college athletes.
