The name might not be recognizable, but you've probably seen a Gadsden flag, typically yellow with a coiled rattlesnake and the warning "Don't tread on me."
The flag was flown by colonists rebelling against British rule. And more recently, it's become the adopted symbol of the Tea parties and conservative Republicans, prompting questions as to whether it's an appropriate theme for merchandise sold at the Gettysburg battlefield bookstore.
There shoppers will find Gadsden flag shot glasses, mugs, magnets and pins. The souvenirs are the only items representing the Revolutionary War sold in the bookstore, said an employee. Mostly, the store offers merchandise that speaks to historic events a century later.
"It isn't sold in a historically relevant context," said Paul Gioni, a battlefield enthusiast from Mahwah, N.J., who contacted the National Park Service and The Evening Sun after visiting the park recently. "This is blatantly political merchandise."

So? Sell Confederate flags instead!;)
I guess Juan Williams better not visit Gettysburg.
Geez. I can’t buy rainbow stuff anymore because the gays hijacked it for their filthy flag. They can deal.
(Does anyone else know the gay flag used to have a pink stripe, for sex? But for some strange reason it was pulled...the rainbow traditionally stands for God’s promise not to destroy the world by water again for mass, unrepentant sin - so strange the gays adopted it...)
But if the National Park Service store was selling the homosexual "Rainbow Flag", well that would be ok. That kind of "politics" is acceptable to liberals.
So even though the klown complained claiming lack of "historical relevance" the truth is that he hates it because conservatives love it. I hope the park service doesn't buckle under.
Heh. We’re gettin’ to ‘em.
In Savannah, Georgia, citizens demonstrate in a huge rally in one of its historic squares, themselves raising a Flag of Independence with a serpent which reads, "Our Motto, Southern Rights, Equality of the States, Don't Tread on Me," 1860. (Library of Congress)
You should see the PC abomination that Antietam battlefield has become.
Then they have the gall to have ‘donation boxes’ in the park.
I left them a note.
Not surprisingly, since the ‘revisions’, donations are way down.
This is why I’d like to see PA pass as many laws as possible that annoy NJ libs — starting with a mirror of Arizona’s anti-illegal alien law, then proceeding to a disparity of force law (and maybe a stand-your-ground law). If we can disgust them enough, maybe they’ll stay away. Or maybe we can just frighten them with something like a 75mph speed limit.
Did the article mention Christopher Gadsden?
Gadsden, a soldier and statesman from South Carolina, was the principal leader of the South Carolina Patriot movement in the American Revolution, was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the War of Independence. He was also the designer of the famous Gadsden flag.
Now I might not be a genius, but Charleston had SOME significance in the Civil War, no? And it has been proudly displayed in several contexts throughout American history, by many factions for different reasons. Did the article mention the origin? Probably not.
What kind of PC stuff do they have at Antietam?
Here in New York city they are having their perv I mean gay parade tomorrow, and one of them told me today they adopted the Rainbow symbol because “Somewhere over the rainbow” was Judy Garlands signature song. Uhh yeah, makes perfect sense to me. Scarecrow, Tinman, Cowardly lion, the Wizard, Oz, munchkins, wicked witch, flying monkeys, tornadoes in Kansas, Kansas farm, emerald city, yellow brick road, Dorothy, ruby slippers, Toto, guards who sing oh wee oh and a witch who melts when you throw water on her....Yes I can definately see how all that equates homosexuality.
Actually no it didn’t, but one of the commenters at the end of the article did. And the complainers POV is nutty - the guilt by association. By his reasoning they shouldn’t sell the CBF or old glory either since TEA partiers wave them as well.
He’s a North Jersey *$$h*le. The area is full of them.
Is that the national park that was renovated as a sort of “drive thru” so people didn’t have to get out of their comfy automobiles?
Here's why it happened:
Nike uses the image of a snake coiled around a soccer ball for an ongoing, patriotic “Don’t Tread On Me” campaign in support of the United States men’s national soccer team. The phrase has become a rallying cry for American soccer fans and the Gadsden flag can occasionally be seen at national team games. A representation of the rattlesnake is contained on the inside of their uniforms, over the heart, with the initials “D.T.O.M.”, which were used in the 2010 World Cup.
