Bullied bus monitor receives more than $200G in online donations

A New York bus monitor who was berated and bullied by a group of middle school students has received more than $200,000 in online donations.

Karen Klein, 68, is seen in a 10-minute viral video attempting to ignore the verbal attacks by students on a bus operated by the Greece Central School District, near Rochester, N.Y. Children on the bus hurl repeated insults and threats at the grandmother, calling her fat and at one point suggesting that her children commit suicide.

But donations have since poured in for the grandmother in hopes that she’ll take a “vacation of a lifetime,” according to fundraising site indiegogo.com. As of midday Thursday, a total of $201,925 had been received for Klein and the video had been viewed on YouTube more than 1.6 million times.

Those kids should be dealt with sternly by their parents and do a long stint of community service. Then they should fall on their knees and thank God if they have wised up before becoming felons.

She had nothing to do with it. The children posted the original torture video; and a well-wisher started the public donation site. Read before kicking the victim.

she was repeatedly called a fat ass, asked what bra size she wears, constantly told that she was ugly and that her kids killed themselves because she was so fat an ugly....

soft?....that fact that she didn't get up and beat the crap out of some of them shows a lot of self control and courage....

One of the comments from youtube actually had a very good recommendation. Have the children work with the elderly in a nursing home.

My mom is in her 80s and is starting to consider a nursing home. I wouldn't want these little heathens anywhere around her.

Sadly, in watching this video, I think we are dealing with child psychopaths. There was a recent NY Times Magazine article on this subject and these horrible kids fit the bill. These kids are our future...

As it should be, imho. The kids were nasty brats and should be punished like bullies are. She was not physically harmed, thank God...and in her life, like most everyone, she's probably taken some verbal abuse or bullying somewhere down the line and dealt with it. The good people who've made the donations online should make up for any amount she would/could get from a lawsuit and none of it's going into some lawyers' pockets.
We're too sue-happy in this country, anyway. I'm one who believes we need to get away from all that.

He feels his son has suffered enough? I'm sure the woman felt she suffered enough after the first few minutes! The boy should learn that actions have consequences , sometimes long reaching and unprecitable. If he would of done the right thing in the first place and respected an old woman, he wouldn't be in this predicament.

That is absolutely correct. Many teachers and administrators are not aware of this and haven’t seen that aspect of it yet, but it’s coming I’m sure.

Anyone can give another person up to $13,000 before a gift tax is triggered.

The donations are not going from individuals to the bus monitor, nor to a charity. It is possible the payment from the person collecting the funds will be taxable.

I hope she gets enough donations to retire from that garbage heap of future humanity that rides that bus. I hope those kids are severly diciplined, humiliated and frightened that they will never say anything ugly to anyone ever again (even if they think it).

Agreed. I would have loved to jump into the screen and give these "kids" the butt-whoopings they deserve. I was brought up to respect my elders and if I did this, my butt would be so sore, I would not be able to sit for a month and most likely, I would have to take in my food with a straw. If it was me, I'd respond, "that's a fuel tank of an 'a**-whooping machine' and if you keep it up, you'll find out." I'd love to take these kids and put them up for a weekend in the local jail cell.

Reminds me of the old "Leave it to Beaver" episode where Beaver got into a fight on the school bus and defended himself (rightly so IMHO but he was the one that got caught) so the bus driver banned him from the bus for a week or two. Then again, we're talking about 1957-63 here. B-P
