BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A 19-year-old home-invasion suspect who escaped while being released from the hospital Sunday was captured early today, still wearing his handcuffs and hospital gown.
Deandre Miles, shot in the chest in Pinson Friday, was captured about 1 a.m., but not without incident. Authorities said when his mother brought him to meet with lawmen, he tried to push her out of the car, and then run over two deputies.
He was subdued, and now is in the county jail.
Jefferson County sheriff's Chief Deputy Randy Christian said deputies and U.S. Marshals met with Miles' mother about midnight Sunday, who agreed to help in his capture by going home to wait for him to show up. The plan was for her to then call law enforcement officers so that he could be arrested.
Instead, she went to pick up her son, Christian said.
Investigators learned this, and warned her that if she did not turn him in, she would be arrested and charged with hindering prosecution.
She agreed to meet with lawmen and, about 1 a.m., met authorities at the Birmingham Police Department's East Precinct. When they got there, Deandre Miles tried to push his mother from the car and drive off, nearly running over two deputies. He was arrested and taken to jail.
Authorities said he was still wearing his hospital gown and handcuffs when he was captured.
Miles escaped while he was being released from St. Vincent's East hospital about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. As he was being wheeled out of the hospital, he broke free and ran, fleeing in handcuffs.
Investigators searching for Miles found a hospital bracelet and sock nearby. Tracking dogs and a helicopter were brought in to search for the suspect, but the authorities suspended the massive search late Sunday evening.
Miles was wounded in a home invasion that happened in the 100 block of Jupiter Drive shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, when three people broke into a home there.
A woman called deputies and reported someone was in her house shooting at her and she was locked in the bathroom. Her husband, who was working in the garage, grabbed a handgun and pointed it at two of the suspects. The husband fired one shot at both men, striking Miles.
Authorities later learned a gunshot victim was at St. Vincent's East and went there. While deputies were investigating, his accomplice and another man returned to the hospital. All three were taken into custody.
Christian said today that Miles is charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree escape. His bond is set at $120,000
Dang.. Obama loses another vote in November?
class act: “tried to push his mother from the car and drive off, nearly running over two deputies”
He is lucky he didn’t get shot again.
Is it just me, or is this home invasion crap becoming more and more common place?
It is getting so bad in my town, that I reinforced by door frames with plate steel and put in steel doors in place of the old wood ones. I even reinforced the hinges with plate steel.
Another one of 0’s sons, if he had one?
Deandre needs more practice or more gun.
Take a look into those eyes. “Dead” is the only word I can use to describe them.
I think you must mean the home owner.
We always hear about how trigger happy the cops are. But here, they probably had good cause to gun him down with extreme prejudice. Kind of wish they had; he's going to end up killing someone, probably someone innocent, before long.
Why does this mugshot not surprise me in the slightest?
The only sad thing about this story is that the husband needs more time on the range. Only one hit and he didn’t bring the perp down.
I can see the first-degree robbery, but that was a third-rate escape...
Take a look into those eyes. Dead is the only word I can use to describe them.
I’ve been referring to that look as the “Shark Eyes”, Pure Predator. And Predator’s have no feeling for their Prey.
Unfortunately we have become to “civilized’ to do the proper thing to vicious predators.
Obviously Amish.
Everything’s going to hell on a fast track and it seems
that's the way the socialist like it.
Our dear leader sets a good example for being unlawful, lying, deviant, lazy, spender of others money, and a party-nut, just to mention a few.
He would rather play golf, rub shoulders with the rich to get donations then do his job. Literally!
Actually spend time in the WH? He didn't sign up for that. Neither did his wife.
Deandre—one of obama’s sons again.
Natch.
Yeah, reading with one eye today. I had cataract surgery and a lens implant this morning. I’m not even supposed to be on this computer yet, LOL
Oh, heck, no! I'll be out in plenty of time to vote early, vote often, and vote for representatives of the Democratic [sic] party. He's actually just a poor, pitiful, helpless victim of society, you see, so he'll be sentenced to 30 days for aggravated spitting on the sidewalk and released after three for good behavior.
Any chance Obama will come out and say he looks like one of his sons?
Take it easy using that “good” eye. Some of us can relate to that with posting and reading posts after surgeries and serious illnesses ourselves.
