There is no doubt: I am a Pineapple Upside-Down Cake.
When I was in the Navy in 1976 as a young Airman Apprentice in VA-46 aboard the JFK, we were tied up to Pier 12 in Norfolk, VA, getting ready to go to sea for carrier qualifications. I was serving time in the Chief's Mess, and it was July 4th, 1776. I remember because we were doing galley duty watching the Bicentennial Ceremony on an overhead television as it was happening in New York.
I remember feeling kind of wretched, thinking "Well, this sucks. THOSE guys are going on Liberty..."
I also remember that day, the large pans of uneaten pineapple cake that came to us in the scullery. Big, huge flat pans filled with yellow cake and a ring of pineapple on each square. I seem to recall they were about two feet wide, three feet long, and two inches deep. The pineapples had been laid out on top, probably five or six across and maybe 10-12 down. The plain yellow cake underneath was okay, but it was the nice, caramelized top that made them irresistible!
I think at least six of those pans came in, and we were just using big spatulas to scrape the uneaten cake into the large, black, gaping maw of the industrial strength garbage disposal. You could probably fit a basketball in that, and we used to stand a few feet away and toss the china plates into the roaring black opening, just to watch it eat them completely without even a hiccup!
I remember stuffing my face with that cake...as I took each pan, I just dug my fingers in and shoved it in my mouth before consigning it to The Hole. It was so wasteful, but hey, you did what they told you to do!
Hahaha...by the way, if you have to do Mess Duty, the Chief’s Mess has to be the best assignment by far! There were some fat chiefs in
You Are a Chocolate Cake |
You are a true classic, and while you're not super cutting edge, you're high quality. People love your company - and have even been known to get addicted to you. |
LOL
Good evening, rlmorel...glad you are enjoying the silliness. One needs regular breaks from the daily grind.
I’m glad you got to snag the pineapple....a happy tummy while working is a good thing.
Good evening LUV. Just finished my first night training. Guess I’ll be a semi regular night owl with this job.
G’Day, Janey.....((HUGS)).....cool friends you have there. d:o)
And you are a chocolate cake!

Howdy, night owl!:) welcome to my world!
We got nearly 2inches of rain tonight....WOOOOHOOO!!
Good for you. Just got off the phone with daughter and wife in Houston and they got rain too. Not a drop for us at home, just a BUNCH of wind.
Hi, Ma!
You Are Strawberry Cake
Fresh, sassy, and romantic.
You’re a total flirt, who never would turn down a sugary treat.
Occasionally you’re a bit moody - but you usually stay sweet!
FYI: Frosting is just a delivery system for cake!
Good evening, Arrowhead...((HUGS))...how was training?
Are you going to have a regular day schedule and a regular night schedule? Same kind of duties, just the night crowd?
It was kind of a wild ride here for a while, but worth it!
Training was good, but just not much time to eat or snack. The day schedule is opening and checking facilities out to people / groups and the night duties are to make sure all are secured and alarms set.
Good evening/morning, Jack...((HUGS))...fresh, sassy, and romantic. LOL!
Enjoy your strawberry cake....delivery systems are important.
Wish we had had some rain. I’ll be headed for the sack in a few.
