Good morning to everyone at the Canteen. I'll have to mow grass early, since we may hit 90º again.

Bob Welch is seldom given the credit he deserves. When legendary English bluesman Peter Green left Fleetwood Mac, it was American born Bob Welch who picked up the pieces and transformed the band into successful Pop icons. In 1970, he was somehow able to bring his songs and pop style to a band that was floundering in the wake of Peter Green's departure. Drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie were without direction after Peter and were unable to continue as a British blues band. The Fleetwood Mac brand was well established, but without a galvanizing frontman they were adrift in a sea of of established bands and most of their fans walked away after Greeny's split.

Enter Bob Welch with his quarky pop songs, well crafted lyrics and almost mystical feel. Beginning with 1971's Future Games album, Fleetwood Mac took on a new personality that lasts to this day. Along with co-guitarest Danny Kirwan, Welch & the band was still able to pull off the rocking blues-based Green songs like "Rattlesnake Shake" and "Oh Well" that had established them, but Welch opened new doors with one successful ballad after another and soon the band were back on Top of The Pops.

Four successful studio albums followed with Welch at the helm. The tours were however, not as successful. Artistic differences and Kirwan's growing alcohol dependency eventually led to Kirwan's quitting the band mid-tour in 1972 and thrusting the role of sole frontman onto Bob's shoulders. By 1974's Heroes Are Hard to Find album, Welch was Fleetwood Mac's undisputed frontman and almost elclusive song-writer. It had been a successful 4 year run for Bob, turning the band around into a more melodic direction until he learned that Fleetwood (his personal manager at the time) and McVie had secretly renegotiated their royality deal with the record company and were pocketing the lion's share of the profits. Eventually resentments formed, lawyers got involved, lawsuits were filed and Mick Fleetwood sacked Bob. But, not before yet another lawsuit from a former manager (Clifford Davis) had enjoined them from touring and recording under the "Fleetwood Mac" moniker. In what would be one of the most bizarre events in rock history, Davis, claimed that he owned the name Fleetwood Mac and it took a year of court action to sort things out. Banned from touring or recording as Fleetwood Mac, Bob moved back to Los Angeles and in 1975 launced a power trio called "Paris" with former ex Jethro Tull bassist Glenn Cornick and ex Todd Rundgren's Nazz drummer Thom Mooney. After two relatively unsuccessful albums with Paris, Welch launched a solo career which resulted in the platinum French Kiss album, a gold album (Three Hearts) and a string of Billboard chart hits throughout the late 70s and early 80s. It is ironic that it was Bob Welch, who introduced backing performers from his French Kiss album, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to Mick Fleetwod, further influencing the future of Fleetwood Mac.

Welch released solo albums into the early 1980s (The Other One, Man Overboard, Bob Welch, and Eye Contact) with decreasing success, during which time developed a heroin addiction. After cleaning himself up in 1986, Welch turned away from performing and recording and focused his attention on songwriting for others. In the early 1990s, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he put together a short-lived group called Avenue M, which backed him on tour and recorded one song for a greatest hits compilation. He later moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1999, Welch released an experimental jazz/loop based album, Bob Welch Looks at Bop. He followed this up in 2003, with His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond, which contained new recordings of songs he originally recorded with Fleetwood Mac, as well as some solo hits. In 2006, he released His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond 2, which mixed a half-dozen new compositions, along with a similar number of his Mac/solo remakes.

On June 7, 2012, Bob Welch committed suicide in his Nashville home. He was found by his wife, Wendy whom he married in 1985. According to the suicide note, Welch, who had had spinal surgery three months earlier with doctors telling him he would not get better, did not want her to have to care for an invalid.

Bob left behind a legacy of songs and performances that are engrained in rock history. In yet another ironic twist, when Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, original band members Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie were named to the Hall, as were Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Welch, who anchored the band for years, was not. "My era was the bridge era," Welch told the Cleveland newspaper the Plain Dealer in 1998, after he was snubbed by the Hall of Fame. "It was a transition. But it was an important period in the history of the band. Mick Fleetwood dedicated a whole chapter of his biography to my era of the band and credited me with 'saving Fleetwood Mac.' Now they want to write me out of the history of the group. It hurts."

In September of 1971, Fleetwood Mac released their first album (Future Games) since Peter Green's departure. It was Bob Welch's debut with the group; his song-writting influence was immediate and his front-man status monumental, launching the band back onto the pop charts and establishing a fresh new sound that has become immediately identifiable as the band's trademark.
