NEW YORK CITY -- A 12-year-old boy harassed by school bullies about his intelligence, his height and his deceased father killed himself in the New York City apartment he shared with his mother, according to relatives and those who knew him, NBCNewYork.com reported.

"I want to remember him as a happy kid," his anguished sister told NBC 4 New York on Thursday.

Joel Morales, of East Harlem, moved to a different school after enduring incessant taunting for months, but the bullying persisted, the fifth-grader’s family said. Advertise | AdChoices

Kids chased Morales, threw sticks and pipes at him and teased him for his smarts and his 4-foot-9 stature, his family said.

Surprisingly enough, I wasn’t abused for being a short boy. But this is still terrible to read.

If he had survived he would have been suspended for a week.

Much of this is from a larger problem of being unable to keep student misbehavior under control, in spite of zero tolerance on just about everything up the wazoo.

May Joel find peace and joy in the hands of God for all eternity.

And prayers to his family for the unspeakable anguish they'll endure the rest of their lives.

Thanks Nachum.

I think this kind of thing is usually overlooked. They’ll enact it though for fighting, because as Liberals believe, defending yourself is wrong. A gym teacher I had my first year did nothing after I had an “altercation” with someone in my gym class, ie he knocked me out and I was mildly concussed (blurry vision on one side) for about 15 minutes. Thankfully that was my last or second to last class of the day. Of course, she did nothing, and became a dean a few years later.

Gotta love NYC.

It’s beyond sad. One field of study that needs to be pursued is the psychological effects of the public school experience.

Oh for the love of Pete.

This kid would have probably been fine if the occupational therapist wasn’t in his business.

Is this some sort of new phenomenon? I ask that, because now each of these tragic incidents are broadcast as if it’s something entirely new, society is going to hell in a hand basket, and we must do something about it.

Can anyone tell me they weren’t subjected to ridicule and name-calling in school? Some people deal with it and others can’t handle it. Yes, it’s unfortunate, but where I see this going is something like implementing programs like zero tolerance and screwing up kids every bit as much as the bullies do.

Is state sponsored punishment less dehumanizing than being called names at school? I’m just surprised we haven’t heard about kids killing themselves for being unfairly screwed over by their local schools.

It going to happen. Just hang in there...

I wouldn't be surprised. If he did, I bet child services would've gone to the home, with the idea that the problem must be originating at home. Poor kid probably would've been taken away from his mother, and she'd be distraught.

There is only one effective way to deal with bullies.

Fight back!

Schools which don't allow this are only enabling the bullies.

"prayers to his family for the unspeakable anguish they'll endure the rest of their lives"

I don't think anguish is in order. Better his family executes a ten fold revenge.

This is terrible. A 12 year old boy thinks suicide is the best option available to him?????

Did the school know of the bullying, did the parents?

I feel horrible for this kid like I always do when I hear someone committed suicide but at 12 years old, may God have mercy on his soul.

RIP.
