FDR'S D-DAY PRAYER JUNE 6TH, 1944
Films such as "Saving Private Ryan", "The Thin Red Line", and "U 571" bring to life the struggles of a whole generation of Americans who fought tyranny in World War II. No movie, however, could adequately capture the sense of dedication and courage which so many ordinary men and women demonstrated in order to bring an end to the horrors that were being committed against innocent people around the world. Sadly, this generation is passing on, as about 1,000 of these heroes are now dying each day due to old age. We must remember and honor these great people to whom America--and you and I--owe everything.
June 6, 1944, is the Anniversary of D-Day. On that day, Allied soldiers stormed onto the French coast to begin the liberation of Europe, then still firmly in Hitlers grip. It was a bitter struggle for those first units, and by the end of the day, 4,900 soldiers had given their lives. Across the US, people fell to their knees in prayer; churches, synagogues were packed; the Liberty Bell was sounded; and people openly wept. It was a day of millions of prayers for the welfare of our troops and the success of the mission. That night, President Roosevelt went on radio to lead the Nation in prayer:
Almighty God, Our sons, pride of our Nation, This day have set upon a mighty endeavor; a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity . . . They fight to end conquest
They fight to liberate . . . They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.
Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know by Thy grace, and the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph. Thy will be done, Almighty God, Amen.

PRAYERS GOING UP FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!
GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE AT VALLEY FORGE
In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting glory and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.
In like manner, let our prayers now rise for our heroes in the American military who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and keep them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Amen.
SHADOWS AT ARLINGTON
Heavenly Father, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your countenance to shine upon them and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

Most often, we would do better not to say all we think or know (or think we know), but instead seek to use words that promote calm and peace. You never know who may be listening.Such a true statement!! Thank you for today's sustenance for body and soul.
A Blessed Lord's Day to The Mayor family.

There are recreational vehicles everywhere here! Summer vacationers are arriving in droves. And neighborhood RVs are reappearing on the local streets.

Thanks very much, Kathy! The graduation went very well. Driving to and from was difficult - we had the most intense rain I've ever encountered outside of the tropics. The ceremony was very well conceived - the processional was, of course, Pomp and Circumstance. The National Colors were posted by the Central Maryland contingent of Young Marines. The keynote address was given by Dr. Nancy Grasmick, former Superintendent of Maryland Schools. There is little on which I agree with her, but she gave a fitting address. The grads processed up to receive their diplomas to tumultuous applause. A local bank gave each of the forty grads a crisp new $50.00 bill with a nice message. The grads processed out to Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary and there was a reception afterward with cake and soft drinks.
Mary is doing quite well in Kenya. She is over halfway through with her mission at this juncture. She had been a little down - for several weeks, she was the only volunteer there. With the end of the academic year, others have arrived and she is not so beleaguered as she was. She is scheduled to return in August, but may come back a little early - one of her cousins is getting married at the end of July.
I had a nice conversation with Biglook on the phone this afternoon - we went over a lot of old ground - the war. We have a lot to share on that topic.
I hope everything is going well with you and your parents. I'm going to have to sign off now - it's getting late on the Right Coast and I need to rest - very fatigued today. I'll be on tomorrow after Church. See you then!
