New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2012 | MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM

Posted on 05/30/2012 7:26:28 PM PDT by John W

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

I was 11 in 1970. There are many here older than I. I am wondering just what the hell happened here, that's for damn sure. No time machine necessary.

What has happened is that two generations of big-government statist liberals ("Progressives") have gradually and intentionally imposed restrictions on freedom that Americans never would have accepted had they been proposed all at once.

Now, they have worn us down to the point where people will glumly accede to nearly any regulation placed upon voluntary, peaceful personal behavior. Why? Because those imposing such restrictions are powerful, motivated, and highly-organized.

Because they control the rule-making bureaucracies, our educational establishments and the news media, and are often very well-funded.

Because over time their intentional efforts have made Americans comfortable with dependency and increasingly fearful of responsibility.

And because fighting back is not only difficult and time-consuming, but exposes those who are willing to oppose statist powers to public derision, ridicule and ostracism. Besides: it's "for the children".

A government big enough and powerful enough to dictate the maximum size of the beverage you are allowed to purchase is more than powerful enough to do whatever else it may wish to do to you. For your own good, of course.

Now, what do you suppose might happen if thousands of convenience stores and restaurants in NYC banded together and refused to comply with the proposed law, under threat of withholding their city tax payments? What if smokers defiantly lit up in public parks and on streets and simply walked away from any cop who tried to write them a summons?

What if delicatessens posted signs on their windows offering "1/2 Price Giant-Sized Drinks and All the Salt You Could Ever Want!!!"

Civil disobedience works. We ought to try it more often.

Let’s see if Fascist Mike will have the balls to:

Confront the NY Jewish delis that serve over-sized sandwiches

Confront the bagel shops about too much high-fat cream cheese smeared on a bagel

Ban all sidewalk hot dog carts

Just like in the City of SF, you pretty much don't see any overweight natives/locals.

It might just be because they don't have any Wal-Marts.

We threw God out, and all the good stuff went with him.

“You ask for a small and they slam you with more soda than you want. “

Then don’t drink it all. Seems simple to me.

Big deal. Just serve them in two or more 16oz cups. Buy one, get one free. Let’s see them ban that.

Bloomberg-—doing the Fed’s work for them, before they get there. There could be no greater handmaiden for the Big Brother Left than Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg. The idea behind
the “smaller size” is to limit your consumption and force you to make “a conscious” (and obviously dread-filled) choice to “do it again” with a second drink.

Bloomie, and the Big Sh*tty voters which he so well represents, are reasons why I must hope that if our enemies in the head rags can’t be prevented from using a nuke on an American city - let it be NYC.

Of all of America’s Big Sh*tty areas, none is as infested with commies and collectivists of all varieties as NYC.

You ask for a small and they slam you with more soda than you want. That’s bad, and they’ve brought this regulation on themselves.

The waitresses where you eat make you finish all of your drink? Do they make you finish your meal then burp you too?

If you don't finish do they spank your little bottom and put you to bed?

Yet the DUmmies celebrated the confiscation of their physical being through Obamacare! Libtards are hypocritical mental patients.

Yep. I was reading the blog responses to this story in the NY Daily News, and as you would expect it was 98% against Emperor Bloombergs nonsense. I couldn't help but wonder how many of these people are also in favor of Universal Healthcare. Probably 40% in NYC. They don't understand the Faustian bargain...if government and your fellow taxpayer is paying for your healthcare, your body belongs to the STATE. Your health becomes a public issue.

Uhh, let’s keep the discussion to the rather mundane subject at hand, and not fly off into that kind of reckless, and totally irresponsible scenario.
