In some way, we all prepare for the diversity and changes life is sure to throw at us. But, some put a lot more thought and effort into it than others. They call themselves “preppers” and there are many living among us. When disaster strikes, they’re ready for the worst-case scenarios.

In part one of Preparing for Disaster; we introduced you to Justin Teet.

Teet lives in a heavily populated suburb of Mobile and is ready to “bug out” if disaster strikes. He has stockpiled provisions for his family, but with a panicked population, he feels the best place for his family is away from home.

“The more people, the more people are going to need supplies; and the more people you’re going to have to worry about,” Teet said.

Far from the busy city streets you can find more preppers, but these country preppers are of a different mind set. They don’t plan on going anywhere. Valerie from Baldwin County is one of them.

She’s part of a group of women that call themselves the “Prepper Chicks.” She and her family have put together at least a year’s supply of some necessities.

The typical prepper thinks in terms of sequestering themselves in some secure location while the world around them goes to heck.

A better and more realistic model might involve becoming part of a group that can efficiently secure and police large tracts of land - perhaps entire sections of cities.

When the SHTF there will be no enforcement, except from the landowner if you are on private property.

Consider a compromise. Buging-in but in town. Most town have out of the where spots. If there is a group you might consider renting a out of the way small commercial building, possible a warehouse with drive in doors that would allow you to conceal your vehicles. Somewhere big enough you each place a large yard barn type building to store equipment and even use as temporary living quarters so you don’t have to heat the whole building and if the roof leak or the buildings drafty you can be nice and snug and have a bit of privacy. Most commercial builds would also be better suited for defense than the average home. Just my thoughts.

Reading all of your posts and the others directed to you, I see that it will be your private property. Also you are talking about currently, but when the SHTF you only would want what you need anyway. I thought about moving to Alaska, but I do not think I could handle the cold.

They were all nice people before this one misstep.

Their neighbors all liked them.
Their first grade teachers liked them.
They always helped little old ladies across the street.
They took in lost pets and fed the birdies.

I understand what you are saying. You do what you can with the situation you are handed.

We live about 35 miles outside a major city. Our kid lives in that city. She thinks I am a tin foil hatter, but she owns a couple of hand guns and a shotgun. And she is *highly* trained in the use of them. I gave her 50 rounds of 00 buckshot because I know she doesn’t keep a lot of ammo around.

I worry that she can get out in the event of a bad scenario. OTOH, I figure with her training and weapons, she’s as capable as any to get here.

So much depends on how fast it happens, if it does. We are heading into completely uncharted territory.

It may have been fate but I settled in rural Alaska. No bug out in plan, too remote and very defensible plus food is very much available from fish to mosse almost year round.

You think your so smart, but what are you gonna do when you're over run by thousands of maurading penguins? ;o)

Theoretically, yes. There are no geographic restrictions, like rivers that would preclude it. And she is certainly capable of hiking 35 miles.

One of the problems with discussions like this is, none of us know where we might be at the moment the disaster takes place. If I am on a business trip out of state, I am screwed.

People that have prepared refuges and safe havens hundreds of miles from where they normally live are not likely to actually get there to use them. Or, if they do, they may well find them occupied.

Watch the signs. 3 days before the crash you can bet the government and its lackeys in the media will be telling us that all is well, the corner has been turned. If I get any indication that something is coming down, I'm not leaving town.

There is no substitute for sound preparation. But there is also no substitute for plain old good luck.

I've read both books by Robert Felix. His website is constantly updated. The item that catches my attention today is cycles. Felix identifies a long list of periodic geophysical/astrophysical cycles in his books. An important list of them are precursors to the start of an ice age. They are all synchronizing right now as they have prior to other ice ages. The key problem is food production. You can't grow food when it is too cold...unless you make massive preparations to do so in advance. The show gets underway this Winter (2012/2013). Lots of "chaos" from 2013 to 2017. Cold for the rest our natural lives from that point forward. Meanwhile, we trifle with stupidity in the management of budgets.

All of the cycles are coming together.

I visit his site usually several times a week. We've exchanged a few emails and he has posted information that I've sent to him.

Another really good site, just ignore the name, is http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/. Very updated and occasionally he shares his thoughts.

Meanwhile, we trifle with stupidity in the management of budgets. All of the cycles are coming together.

Including those cycles related to civilization, this time on a global scale, it seems.

You're going to need God or luck in the sanctuary selection process, or be able to adjust as conditions warrant.

I highly recommend "The Harbinger", by Cahn and "The End of America" by Price for thought food. Mr. Rawling's site http://www.survivalblog.com is one of the best for information about preparation and what could be just around the corner, as you probably already know.

Just guessing, but the American Bible Belt, parts of Africa, Panama, Chile, Australia, places where there are good and honest God fearing folk and obvious signs of God's blessings on the land are places I would consider.

Like you, I believe the climate is going to become much colder. Also, I think we may see an increase in earthquakes and volcanic activity as part of a separate cycle. And I'm looking for temperature extremes this summer as the world's thermal conveyance changes.

I have prepped my house and am always stockpiling but I am 50 years old in decent health. I am overweight. My wife and her sister live with me and both have health issues. I simply cannot leave easily unless I leave them behind. This I will not do.

I have hardened my house and will do what I can but this will be my stand most likely. I do not wish to be a refugee wondering the wilderness begging for scraps with 2 women with health problems.

I can defend this house better than trying to flee into the unknown. If I had another 2 years, I might have been able to do more, but I do not think we have another 6 months. My money only goes so far.

I will not post all the details of my prep on an open forum but I have prepared for past year especially and started a couple of years before that.

I have made friends with some younger people in the neighborhood and have made note of others with useful skills that may form a defensive core group but I cannot be sure till SHTF how they will react. As such, I basically count on for what I can control for now.

If we have a total economic collapse, most people in this country are pretty much screwed. City dwellers will quickly become predator or prey. There isn't going to be any holing up in an apartment or commercial building. Mobs will break into every building looking for food, water and weapons. Once everything starts grinding to a halt, the predators will start mobilizing. Traffic will be snarled and walking out will just get you killed. That's just the reality.

Only those in the remotest locations will be insulated from the mob violence. And of those, only the ones who stored up supplies will be able to survive until new food sources are cultivated. In Alaska, those who are way out in the wilderness will be the ones best off, if they have a sufficient food supply. Of the people who live in population centers, the ones who live on an airstrip property and own a plane will be in the best position to bug out.

Bugging in is an option only for small scale disasters, like a week-long power outage or an earthquake that doesn't cripple the entire economy. But when our economy collapses under the weight of all the accumulated debt, we will be in deep feces and it will get really ugly for most of the population.
