The news Monday that 43 different Catholic entities across the country are suing the Obama administration, in response to the Health and Human Services' (HHS) rule mandating employer health care coverage of contraception, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization, comes as a blow to the president's strength among Catholics, a demographic that helped carry him to victory in 2008.
This news comes on the heels of the the latest CBS News/New York Times poll which finds Mitt Romney now leading President Obama among women, yet another demographic that he previously commanded.
If Mr. Obama was hoping to once again rely on Catholics and women to help carry him to electoral success in 2012, it appears as though he is miscalculating.
A recent survey by the Pew Research Center shows that, despite the administrations self-portrayal as the champion of womens issues amidst a supposed Republican war on women, the presidents reelection advantage among women has declined in recent months as well as with another key demographic -- Catholics.

The Pew survey finds that, among Catholic voters with an opinion, 47% would today vote for President Obama, and 52% for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
That same margin, were it to hold on Election Day, would mark a swing of 18 million voters away from Obama.
The loss of these Catholic votes alone would remake the 2008 electoral map, delivering Florida to Governor Romney and leaving the president no margin for error in Colorado or Ohio.

The Obama administration no doubt knew it would lose some support with Catholics in the mandate. But they surely did not anticipate the strong and unified voice with which Catholic leaders, in particular bishops, responded even after the administration offered a compromise widely rejected as an accounting gimmick.

Lol. You didn't mean Catholics? WHAT "other" 86% were you referring to?
You are so FULL of it.
True!
And stupid.
Though few Americans know much about him other than his name, Otto von Bismarck was perhaps the most brilliant diplomat of the 19th Century, involved in the most cutthroat of realpolitik schemes that amounted to “war by other means”.
He was in his own way, as effective and ruthless as Abraham Lincoln, a contemporary of his. I mention this because one of the very few times Bismarck “came a cropper” was when he decided to overpower the Catholic church.
Obama ain’t no Bismarck.
This effort by his apostate Catholic, Sibelius, will likely be remembered as the worst political gaffe since Jimmy Carter’s “malaise” speech. But its effects to the Democrat party may be far worse, and long term in its consequences.
I can’t believe any real Catholic would vote for him.
Just what is wrong with these people?
**The Pew survey finds that, among Catholic voters with an opinion, 47% would today vote for President Obama, and 52% for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.**
Now who was I arguing about this with? LOL!
Real Catholics never voted for him; he is losing the half-hearted ones. If the hierarchy had done its job in 2008 he wouldn’t even have won the election...
90 % of the Catholics I know, 100% of those in my parish, voted against Obama in 2008.
See, the people you know may not reflect accurately the group they belong to.
“Catholic” is used by a lot of people who have long since abandoned any pretext of following the Church’s teaching.
The term “Catholic” when used in polls and political analysis is a next-to-meaningless term. You have to break it down by regular Mass attendance etc.
There is, I hope, an underground thing going on that is changing the metrics of American politics, I think that you Mainiacs, judging from the last State election , might be waking up.
Wannabes, social cafeteria catholics, the Pelosian "catholic" RAT-legislator, who steals the Catholic vote and then stabs them in the back by voting pro-baby killer in their legislative body.
Otto von Bismarck was a vehement anti-Catholic. He promoted the “May laws” which persecuted the Catholic clergy, especially in the Rheinland. This was in the 1870’s. Eventually they had to repeal these hideous, discriminatory laws. Most people do not have knowledge of this sort of religious intolernace in Germany in the last 19th century. It was a prototype for events to come in the 20th century.
Dictators who want control of their people always begin with the religious leaders of the people and try to undermine the influence of such institutions. They go after the biggesgt fish in the hope that if they can destroy their influence, they will have clear sailing to over run all other oposition.
Sad, it is beyond sad that so many either don't know or don't care about their faith
the democrat party should have lost Catholics a long time ago. Wondering where this outrage has been all this time!?
(Sound familiar?)
One way we're at an even worse disasdantage here: some of our clergy and people are on he other side. Most of our Universities are long gone over to the secular mindset (I mean LONG gone: since the Land 'o' Lakes Conference in 1967) and I have big worries about the Catholic Hospitals. Still, we're at the turning of the times. Our B16-era leaders are finding their backbones. It's a great time to be Catholic.
Ah! Now I understand.
Excellent!
