DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that provides a framework to encourage greater environmental awareness and adoption of green products and solutions with NASCAR fans and the entire industry. The MOU is a voluntary partnership around education and awareness. The agreement denotes some core areas NASCAR and the EPA will collaborate on moving forward including the following programs: E3: Economy, Energy and Environment; and Design for the Environment (DfE) labeled consumer and commercial products. The MOU, which can be accessed at http://bit.ly/EPA-NASCAR-mou, will pave the way for other opportunities and areas of focus for EPA and NASCAR such as sourcing more sustainable concessions at NASCAR events, expanding the use of DfE-labeled chemical products, conserving water, and continuing to grow the promotion and practice of all applicable types of recycling. Through E3, NASCAR and the EPA will work together to foster the adoption of green approaches, address sustainability challenges, and seize opportunities. A continuously greener sport -- and NASCAR's supplier network -- will have positive economic and environmental impacts that extend far beyond the race track in the communities that NASCAR and the EPA serve.

NASCAR, in partnership with industry, environmental and academic groups, will also begin to evaluate the potential for adoption of green products as labeled under the EPA Design for the Environment program as having met rigorous environmental standards. NASCAR Green is also planned to be employed as a platform for enhancing awareness among NASCAR fans and business-to-business partners of the benefits of using DfE-labeled products in our homes, communities and at work. The MOU is based on the spirit of collaboration and does not address regulatory issues.

"This collaboration is a statement of NASCAR's commitment to green innovation and our role as a leader in sustainability," said Mike Lynch, NASCAR managing director of green innovation. "This partnership will provide new resources that will allow our industry to create innovative environmental education and awareness platforms while continuing to build on our strong momentum in reducing the environmental impact of our sport."

"Because NASCAR is such a thrilling sport followed by millions of passionate fans and business-to-business partners, it can be a powerful platform to raise environmental awareness, drive the adoption of safer products by more Americans, and accelerate the greening of our economy to protect the planet," said Jim Jones, EPA's acting assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP). "The EPA and NASCAR partnership attests to the notable inroads that NASCAR has already made into the arena of environmental stewardship -- through multiple recycling initiatives for waste and automotive fluids, to greener fuel choices."

Last month, NASCAR issued a 'white paper' detailing the various programs that have made NASCAR a leader in green initiatives across all sports. The data in "The Sports Leader in Sustainability"* illustrated the steps NASCAR has taken in educating fans, reducing the sport's environmental impact and validating green technologies -- both on and off the track. The report can be accessed at http://bit.ly/green-white-4-19.

Reports of Nascar's demise are not greatly exaggerated.

This and Obama's economy will only ensure its imminent demise will now accelerate. Just a hunch.

Green used to be a nice color.

Now it’s an adjective that colors everything it touches.

Whatever it touches, it ruins.

Green.... Ick! It makes me want to throw up.

Yes, the leaders are pitting.. pulling onto their stalls, pit crewpersons attach the quick charge cables.. no one takes t’ars as the new solid composite t’ars are good for 5,000 miles..

and Wow! strategy plays out,, Kurt Busch only took half a load of juice, hIs brother left the pit with his cable trailing behind.. This is gonna be quite a finish as the WindPower Systems 300 wraps up..

no, Wait!! Jeff Gordon’s car has started top shoot sparks out of the top of its roof..

Oh Nooooz, what next?

This will just make NASCAR better and better. Imagine the "race" when the goal is to go as far as possible on one tank of gas. After the Volt pulls over a few minutes into the race, the Prius jockeys will be drafting off each other at 40-42 mph for hours, trying to get that extra lap before the fuel tank runs dry, and the excitement will be totally different from today's races. Plus, at 40 mph, the sport will be completely safe. Obama will fundamentally transform NASCAR just as he transformed the largest, strongest economy in the world.

Just another organization being led astray by twenty-somethings in their Marketing Department who popped out of college actually believing all this crap (and thinking that everybody else believes it too).

Same thing that made those sponsors drop Limbaugh.

Considering how much it cost them (ok, well, it cost somebody ), do they have any alternative?

After over five decades of being a NASCAR far I just don’t care about it anymore. The idiot who is running it is running it into the ground. Not knowing the fan base and being PC is turning off the crowd.

Is the idiot ruining NASCAR the same douchebag who told fans not to bring Rebel flags to races? Dennis France?

I too have been a fan for five decades and find the current state of racing to be boring. I see empty seats where once all races sold out. It’s not all the economy, it these baby Frances that run the operation these days, little PC brats. I can afford to go, but don’t want to. I like the local dirt tracks much better now.

This whole slippery slope started with carburetor restrictor plates. It was the end of actual racing.

I shook off NASCAR a long time ago, but it has not given me any pleasure to watch it incrementally crap on the people who love the sport. One can go back a long ways and find instances where "the family" made concessions to interests with enough clout, but it has become so blatant of late that I marvel at the public's credulity.

At this stage of the game, there is no PC cause to which the NASCAR hierarchy will not bow in order to perpetuate their own little empire.

NASCARs present management is utterly clueless! The sport is dieing from diversity/Green initiatives and abandonment of its core fans...
