The number of black and Hispanic registered voters has fallen sharply since 2008, posing a serious challenge to the Obama campaign in an election that could turn on the participation of minority voters.
Voter rolls typically shrink in non-presidential election years, but this is the first time in nearly four decades that the number of registered Hispanics has dropped significantly.
That figure fell 5 percent across the country, to about 11 million, according to the Census Bureau. But in some politically important swing states, the decline among Hispanics, who are considered critical in the 2012 presidential contest, is much higher: just over 28 percent in New Mexico, for example, and about 10 percent in Florida.
For both Hispanics and blacks, the large decrease is attributed to the ailing economy, which forced many Americans to move in search of work or because of other financial upheaval.

If they don’t get those registrations moving, the Obamas won’t be going on many more vacations.
They can go on vacation, but it will be on their own dime except for the party time Secret Service expense we have to foot... for the next 30+ years
They’ve got time. All Democrats must re-register this year for their parties Wednesday, Novermber 7th election day. No ID will be required and if they want they can vote twice.
Not so loud, they’ll hear you!
Maybe it is black and hispanic workers that Obama is causing to disappear in order to get the unemployment percentage down?
so many tombstones....so little time....
"I love the smell of desperation in the morning! It smells like, VICTORY!
Indeed, the reason they do not want voter ID is because their criminal voting base want the right to vote but do NOT want to serve JURY DUTY!!
Some deal, I tell ya...
They are given every opportunity to register to vote. If they choose NOT to do so, that's fine with me. I'd rather they didn't show up, than do so just to vote for someone who says he'll give them something, or because he 'looks like them'.
I feel the same about ignorant or freeloading WHITE voters.
How do the registrations fall? Someone clean the voter registration files? I can see it if they are talking about new registrations, but they’d fall also as you approach 100% registration. Now the story claims when they move they lose their registration. Exactly how does the voter registration office know you moved/sold or lost your house unless you notify them? This is a typical BS story that editors should be asking questions about the sources and methods.
Never fear, ACORN is here!
I'm getting sick and tired of presidential candidates having to kiss up to the so-called Hispanic votes because Hispanic votes can turn electoral college votes this way or that way in many states.
It seems that every time that I listen to the news, commentators talk about how Romney has to watch himself in this state or that state because those states have a large Hispanic population, both legal and illegal.
It seems that the non-Hispanic votes don't count for anything anymore.
So I say that we go to a one man one vote voting system, where presidential candidates don't have to kiss up to Hispanic voters or black voters to try to get elected President.
Yes, let's change the Electoral College or get rid of it so that we can concentrate on letting the system of one man one vote determine our President by majority rule.
You can do that with welfare rolls as well ~ and I've seen it done. First time it happened it cleared out half the beneficiaries.
Smells like BS to me. It’s the WaPo, and I don’t trust any info coming from that most often Leftist source anymore.
We have to act as though the enemy (the Left) are fully armed, and ready for battle right to the end.
No problem!
Thanks to same-day voter registration, any missing votes can be eaily restored on Election Day simply by taking a bus through the 'hood, along with a few cartons of smokes and bottles of hooch.
November 6th is going to be like the day the Olympic committee rejected Chicago, only about a billion times better.
