DISNEY DEPARTURE: Rich Ross quit as Disney's studio head on Friday, a move seen as taking responsibility for at least a couple of write-offs that include a $200 million loss on "John Carter."
BIG-BUDGET AVERSION: The move comes as Disney looks to trim what it spends on movies. Although Ross helped restructure and cut costs, some big-bet movies still bombed.

It was rumored even before John Carter came out that the film would bring down Rich Ross. And it did.

How much money would Star Wars had made if the movie was titled “Luke Skywalker”?

Thanks Vince Ferrer.
Has anyone seen “John Carter”? I used to read fiction, and enjoyed a number of the John Carter of Mars series from Edgar Rice Burroughs. The late P.J. Farmer noted that any writer who can create the most widely recognized character in literature (Tarzan) should not be given the brush-off. He said it better than I just did. :’)

Has anyone seen John Carter?

Yes. It was a pretty good film. My friend said the same, and he’s 28 years older.

Some people explained this last moth, but how can a movie that takes in $270,000,000 lose money and be a flop?
To: dfwgator
Re-name and re-lease disney! I saw it, it was pretty good. They should make the whole series of books.
I cann’t believe a company as smart as Disney could screw up marketing something that good.
I should be able to pick up the DVD in the bargain bin for $1 in 10 years.

That’s how I felt about “Master and Commander”, it’s a shame that it didn’t do well enough to warrant making sequels for it.

I read a few John Carter books when I was a boy. Whoever figured that story would do well in this day and age should not be in the movie business.

Flop or not, I’m looking forward to seeing “John Carter” when I get around to it. :)

The exhibitor gets around 30%, leaves $190 million.
Then just printing and distributing 4000 theatre prints takes another $M40. So at best the producer gets 150M for his expenditure of 200M.

Avatar was practically the same story as John Carter and look how well that did. It’s all in the execution.
