Barack Obama made an uncharacteristic error, more akin to those of his predecessor George W Bush, by referring to the Falkland Islands as the Maldives.
President Obama erred during a speech at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, when attempting to call the disputed archipelago by its Spanish name.
Instead of saying Malvinas, however, Mr Obama referred to the islands as the Maldives, a group of 26 atolls off that lie off the South coast of India.

Just don't go in July/August, nasty weather down there. Try to go sometime in January. Then after a bit of a row you can sail around to Vina del Mar in Chile and relax on the beach.
P.S - can we have Grenada back sometime soon? /gentle leg pull.
As far as I know you have had it back for some time. They have a Governor-General and everything.
Barf.
Argentines are not popular with other Latin Americans. They have a serious arrogance problem, and barely regard themselves as Hispanic - they speak a heavily Italianized Spanish in the areas around Buenos Aires, with an accent that makes them the joke of Latin America, yet they still run Spanish as a Second Language programs that leave other Spanish speakers befuddled by their students. They also try to dominate Spanish language websites and everything else, although they have not only a strange accent but even a lexicon that is entirely their own.
Argentina also has a heavy English/Welsh influence, as well as many ... er, Germans...so I’m not sure catering to Argentina is going to buy Bambi much love from the rest of Latin America.
But he’s such an idiot that I doubt he has bothered to do any research into it. He thinks all those little brown non-English speaking people down there are the same. Arrogant S...
Exactly...Argentines don’t consider themselves Latino/as they are Europeans !
Where is Malvinas anyway?
Never mind that Britain has been our friend for a lot longer than Argentina??
This is supposed to be the “worldly, sophisticated, brilliant” president who is “comfortable” with “the world”...except when he demonstrates that he is even more parochial and uncurious about the rest of the world than Bush was.
Nobama takes a squat on our Republic.
Obama's "our" probably isn't the same as yours.
My point, exactly.
Magna Cum Laude....Harvard Law....I say B.S. : )
Obama proves to ignorant to properly betray our British allies at the behest of fascist Peronist Argentinian regime.
“the Malidves are off the Kenyan coast!”
You can see Maldivia from the his brother’s hut!

THe Maldive Islands just had an Islamic-oriented coup. Obama got the right island, just the wrong hemisphere.
Make that 58 states, Obie, of the Organization of Islamic States. I’ll bet you will be visiting each one in your reelection campaign bus (if you can get all those bodies out from under it).
To the best of my knowledge, Bush was never in doubt as to what year it was. Can’t say that about King Barry.
I know that Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile have much “whiter” populations than countries further north, and that Argentina in particular views itself as more of a European country; just the same, many South American countries support their claim to the islands.
why they changed it I can’t say, I guess they just liked it better that way.... (tmbg ping)..
