Barack Obama made an uncharacteristic error, more akin to those of his predecessor George W Bush, by referring to the Falkland Islands as the Maldives.
President Obama erred during a speech at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, when attempting to call the disputed archipelago by its Spanish name.
Instead of saying Malvinas, however, Mr Obama referred to the islands as the Maldives, a group of 26 atolls off that lie off the South coast of India.

Had Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney said this, the media would be giving us HOURLY breaking news updates, telling us this is proof of how stupid they are, and ignorant of foreign policy!!
Uncharacteristic?
Even if he got it right, calling it the Malvinas is practically siding with Argentina, as far as the Brits are concerned. Try going into Istanbul and start refrring to it as Constantinople or Byzantium and see what happens.
Undoubtedly he put on one of his fake accents as he incorrectly named these islands. What a worthless tool we have as a president. I’m embarassed for him and he certainly is an embarassment to America.
Not uncharacteristic at all. He blows it every time he opens his rotten stinking mouth. It’s just covered up daily by the butt licking press, same as they do for Biden.
Unexpectedly, Klownie the Kenyan is an idiot of the highest caliber. He even read the word on his other brain, the teleprompter.
Do they speak Austrian in the Maldives?
I believe you can get there on the intercontinental railroad...
Yes...and it’s the 57th state of the union!! :)
Notice how the press, even in pointing out Obama’s error, STILL have to fault Bush! I don’t recall Bush making an error in geography. And Obama has made several.
Sorry, I don't think he's that bright.
I hope we don’t go to war with India.........My company got a lotta customers there..........
Just using another opportunity to piss off the Brits!
Uncharacteristic? From the guy who think there's 57 states, never learned to speak "Austrian", and thinks Marines are addressed as "Corpse-man"?
He's the Ron Burgundy President; he reads whatever is on the teleprompter.
Are there any corpsemen on that island?
Mr. Gilber, you really need to follow this man more closely.
Silly Telegraph. In fact, once again 7 billion people and the foreign press (the American press is busy watching Hillary party hearty) simply misunderstood him.
He actually said Malvinas, effectively both sucking up to Argentina (and the OAS) and offending Britain.
Mere mortals make embarrassing mistakes. The Won does not.
Reference plus ungood delete Maldives insert Malvinas/Bush’s fault end
My thought exactly.
This should be headline news in all 57 states.
