Republican Mitt Romney holds a slim edge over President Obama in a head-to-head matchup, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows. In addition, the poll finds the presidents job rating has dropped to its lowest point of the year.
In a presidential matchup, Romney tops Obama by 46-44 percent if the election were today.
As with every Romney-Obama matchup in the past six months, the race is so tight that it is within the polls margin of sampling error. This, however, is only the second time the Fox News poll shows Romney on top. The first time was November 2011, when he was also up by 2 percentage points.

The poll was conducted Monday through Wednesday. On Tuesday, Rick Santorum suspended his presidential bid -- giving Romney a clear path to the Republican nomination.
More Republicans (42 percent) than Democrats (32 percent) or independents (34 percent) say they are extremely interested in the upcoming presidential election.
Even so, the strength of party support in the matchup is dead even: 85 percent of Democrats back Obama and 85 percent of Republican back Romney.
Among the highly sought after group of independents, the poll found 43 percent back Romney and 37 percent Obama. Nearly one in four independent voters (21 percent) is undecided or wont vote for either of the major party candidates. Last month, independents split evenly between Obama and Romney at 40 percent each. In February, Romney had a 9-point advantage.

Independents is where this will be won...... Obama will now face attacks and with all the bad news for him this week his number I project will further decline....
Not good.
Obama is underwater in almost all categories, all ages...
And the Washington post poll that said the opposite, was weighted with 11% more Democrats, that means Obama is still -5 in that poll!
[Not good.]
Are you serious? You want Obama to win? Honestly, the attitudes here, are to the point of insanity.
I took this to mean that it is not good for Obama....
Why? you want obama for four more years?
Well, independents do decide who wins...the difference between beltway brainiacs and us is that they think you win independents by acting like the other guy. We know you win independents by offering conservative solutions to problems. We'll see if Mitt drives left or right to win this thing. I suspect some of each.
The poster said; “Not good”. How difficult is that to interpret? This forum has gone so far to the Right that it came back out on the Left, and the sad thing is, it seems like it does not matter, that we will all suffer the consequences of a Tyrannical Government if Obama wins another term.
Never forget what we are actually on the verge of losing.
Mitt Romney will not be able to overcome basic math.
US debt obligation is 20 times the amount of money in existance.
But, at least Romney won’t be actively burning the house down and fomenting a race war at the same time.
Regardless of Romney, this is great news for down-ticket conservatives. Independents are the key to this election and if they are pro-Romney, they will be in the bag down-ticket.
Rombots strategy is simple:
He is a squishy moderate - So all of those fence-riders will feel it is “ok” to go with him because he doesn’t seem too different from Obama, which they dont really care for anymore without feeling they are going “too far”.
He can claim several important states as “home” - Michigan, Mass, with Maine and NH by proxy.
“Deseret” is basically in the bag - Nv, Az, Ut, Colo, Id, Wy, with parts of several others.
The south isnt going to vote for Obama no matter how tick they are with Romney.
That’s right,
The very first step in saving a severely wounded soldier in the field, is to STOP THE BLEEDING immediately!
If that critical step is delayed, or ignored, there will be no need to rush the patient to the hospital, it will be to the morgue instead.
“85 percent of Republican back Romney.”
That’s simply NOT true. You haven’t posted a poll, but a pro-Mitt propaganda drivel.
A poll yesterday showed that only 42% of Republican voters approve a Mitt nomination. 58% do not.
“The very first step in saving a severely wounded soldier in the field, is to STOP THE BLEEDING immediately!”
Well, if you’re looking for a savior, you kill him, and hope for resurrection. No Romney, no way.
Good analysis. I know many Obama voters that will vote for Mitt precisely because he is left enough that they don’t feel like they are voting for a conservative.
But these same people will not vote for a candidate that has been made to look ridiculous. That is where Mitts mormonism will come in. And that is going to be Obama’s strategy.....
