The crazed gunman who wounded four Brooklyn cops was reaching for another rifle loaded with more powerful, armor-piercing bullets to inflict deadly injuries just before he was stopped, officials said yesterday.
If he would have been able to grab that gun, this would have been a lot more tragic. It would have been in Gods hands, said a police official familiar with the case.
Its apparent [the suspect] wanted to shoot it out with cops and go out in a blaze of glory.
Cops said the ammo from suspect Nakwon Foxworths sawed-off military assault weapon would have easily pierced the Kevlar shield that hero Detective Kenneth Ayala used to protect his comrades and himself from the perps initial 12-bullet barrage from a 9mm revolver.
The more powerful bullets also would have gone through the officers vests, police said.

In the madness of the Clinton era when he banned “assault” rifles, Ruger redesigned all his semi-autos as lever actions.
Wonder what the reporters would have said if this perp had reached for a lever action magazine fed .223!
We had a Mini-14. It was a POS. Very inaccurate. Maybe we just got a lemon but I have heard the same thing from a lot of other folks. We gave it away and got a Bulgarian AK 74. Accurate to 200 yards right out of the box.
See post # 98. One can even start a flame war and be called a liar even here over the Mini 14! (not you).
I’ve seen crappy guns from S&W, Colt, Sig, Need I say Century Arms? I don’t doubt that you had a bad one.
I’ve only shot a dozen or so and they were all owned by serious shooters who knew what to look for so that can’t be considered a random sample.
One thing that a lot of folks don’t know to do is match the twist rate to bullet weight. Can make a huge difference.
I’ve heard all kinds of stories about thin barrels. My Mini has a barrel that measures .559 with a .178 wall. My Romanian SAR 1 has a .550 diameter with a .135 wall. My Win Model 70 30-06 has tapered barrel of .596 dis with a .154 wall.
They’re called the American AK 47 and I judge it in the same class. I’m very happy with it and if you knew what I paid for it you’d cry.
Some of the most vociferous critics that I’ve met have never even shot them.
OOPS! Those were the measurements before the canoeing accident.
Hope you know that I wasn’t busting your cajones over a .001 of an inch. Close enuff for gubmint work . Wrap some bacon around it and it will work fine.
I've always wondered who buys those (and the other "pistol" versions of battle rifles). A friend had one at the range once...it was a fun but useless ammo muncher. Adding a foregrip made it a bit more controllable, but it turns out that it is illegal as well.
Rifle ammo is made to go through a rifle barrel. Put it through a short pistol barrel and much of the energy of the powder is wasted as muzzle flash.
Well to each his own but our AK 74 will shoot a 1 inch pattern at 100 yards and a 1.5 inch at 200 yards. We put a holographic sight on it which is better for me. I have claimed it as it’s light enough for me to handle. We also got an incredibly good deal on it.
My fiacee’s Busmaster M-4 will do the same thing and shoot out to 600 meters. But his has the match grade barrel and trigger.
The Mini’s are popular. In the final analysis any weapon is better than no weapon. :)
Many non-gun tech types seem tothink that firearm calibers are representatives of teh numbers in teh cartridge name. They usually are not.
The 38-40 being just another exception to the rule that all exceptions. I have no details on why the 38-40 indeed has a non-standard .400/.401 groove daimeter, and probably should be called the .40 or .41-40 vice .38-40. But it does have a better sectional density compared to the 44-40 200 grain slug and therfore should penetrate better, but I’d prefer a 200 grain slug over a 175-180 .40 cal if required to use BP arms of that era as they all generated about the same muzzle velocity due to the limits of BP burn rates and pressure curves.....
Try ‘splaining why a 5 inch 38 caliber gun is not a 5inch barrelled .38 spl. rather, it is a 5 inch bore, 38 caliber in length barrel ( 5”x 38= 190” barreled) naval gun....

OOPS! This was supposed to go to you last night, sent it to
myself.
Hey, we work to tight tolerances! :o)
.
Ruger rifles are kind of sloppy.
Some are good, but most are trash, and you never know until you fire them.
We have one of the first edition Ruger 10/22’s. A great little rifle especially with the 25 round bannana clip. It looks like the new 10/22 breakdown is also a good weapon. But the Mini-14 not so much.
I have two 10/22s, one shoots straight, the other is totally unpredictible.

Or really, really old ones like the .45-70.
sarc/off
Indeed.
****The “sawed off military assault weapon” was a ruger mini 14. The “powerful armor piercing bullets” were standard .223 ammo ***
Good thing it was not one of them thar evil 30-30 Winchesters! Harry Tracy piled up lawmen like cordwood (11 dead) with his before killing himself!
Here are two...Something old, something new:
