Inviting Bill Clinton on campaign trail carries risk, reward for Obama
By Josh Lederman - 04/09/12 05:25 AM ET
President Clinton is willing to do whatever he can to get President Obama reelected, according to his former aides.
Its just a matter of whether Obama wants the help.
Bringing Clinton on the campaign trail could do wonders for Obamas appeal among disenfranchised blue-collar voters and reluctant donors, strategists say. But it could also pose risks for Obama, who could be overshadowed by the effusive former president.
President Obama would be wise [to use him], and Im sure he would welcome President Clinton as one of the great campaigners alive today, and still one of the most popular Democrats in the country, said Lanny Davis, former special counsel to Clinton and a columnist for The Hill.
The two Democratic presidents have a complicated relationship dating back to the epic primary battle between Obama and then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.). An outspoken advocate for his wife, Clinton defended her against Obama and criticized him for launching personal attacks.
The hatchet has long since been buried, advisers said, pointing to the visibly close relationship between Obama and his secretary of State.
Hillary Clinton does not plan to join Obama on the campaign trail this year because she doesnt want to risk politicizing her role as the nations top diplomat, senior administration officials said last week. But the former first lady has dipped her toe into the political sphere on occasion, including calling out Rush Limbaugh during the contraception battle in early April for what she called a verbal assault on Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke.
Her husband, meanwhile, has kept a low profile on political matters throughout the Republican presidential primary.
Clinton said last week that he had agreed to do three fundraisers with Obama. But beyond raising money, the question remains whether Clinton will have a major role as a surrogate for Obama or a public face for the campaign.
The Obama campaign and Clintons office did not respond to requests for comment for this story.
Its a shame that President Clinton hasnt been used by President Obama and the Obama White House on a variety of issues that he could have been helpful on, said one Democratic strategist with knowledge of the situation. For reasons that are not apparent, he hasnt been very well used.
Recent polling suggests President Obama is doing better among independent voters and in swing states than he was just a few months ago. But he continues to struggle among white working-class voters and those without college degrees.
One aide in the Obama administration expected Clinton would play a substantial role in the reelection campaign, noting Clintons unmatched ability within the Democratic Party to convey a crisp economic message with emotion and sympathy.
Mitt Romney has also struggled with blue-collar voters during the primary. But Republicans have argued that the general election will be a referendum on Obamas economy, and that voters who are struggling financially will undoubtedly come around to the GOP nominee.
Clinton can certainly be helpful among some moderate voters, some ethnic groups, some for whom the biggest issue is the economy, said Steve Rabinowitz, a former Clinton White House aide and a Democratic strategist. For sure, hell play as prominent a role as the Obama campaign asks him to.
Putting Clinton on the trail could also galvanize some Democrats who plan to vote for Obama anyway but have yet to lend a hand, said Rabinowitz.
People who were Obama supporters to start but are still sitting on their wallets might open up for Clinton, he said.
But giving Clinton a major role also adds an element to unpredictability for Obamas political team, a group not known for any fondness for surprises. Theres also the risk that Clinton could steal the limelight from the man who is actually on the ballot.
When Clinton made an appearance in the White House briefing room to declare his support for a tax-cut compromise in December 2010 almost 10 years after leaving office Obama introduced Clinton and said he would speak very briefly. Obama excused himself a few minutes later to get to a Christmas party, but Clinton kept going solo, taking questions from the press for another 20 minutes.
Clinton also has a tendency to speak his mind, and criticized Obama in 2011 in his book Back to Work, charging Democrats and Obama with losing the messaging battle on economic issues in the lead-up to the 2010 midterm elections. He also recently defended the presumptive GOP nominee for rejecting a federal healthcare law similar to the one he implemented in his home state.
I have some sympathy for Gov. Romney because he couldnt have been nominated defending the Massachusetts law as a good model for the nation, because of where the Republican primary had gone, Clinton told NBCs Luke Russert last week.
When Clintons vice president, Al Gore, ran for president in 2000, Gore distanced himself from his former boss, whose reputation at the time was still blighted by the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Gores decision was questioned later, after he lost the election.
This time around, there is another element at play: Hillary Clinton, whom many Democrats hope will run again for president in 2016. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has joined the ranks of those calling for her to make another bid, but Clinton has suggested she has little interest in returning to politics.
Ive been there; I know what happens when you go through this decompression, after years of relentless, high-pressure activity, Bill Clinton told NBC. And I just think she needs to rest up, do some things she cares about, and whatever she decides to do, Ill support.
The Idiot's Guide to Chinagate
By Richard Poe
May 26, 2003
CHINA WILL LIKELY replace the USA as world leader, said Bill Clinton in a recent Washington Post interview. It is just a matter of time. Clinton should know. He has personally done more to build Chinas military strength than any man on earth.
Most Americans have heard of the so-called "Chinagate " scandal. Few understand its deadly import, however. Web sites such as "Chinagate for Dummies" and its companion "More Chinagate for Dummies" offer some assistance. Unfortunately, with a combined total of nearly 8,000 words, these two sites like so many others of the genre offer more detail than most of us "dummies" can absorb.
For that reason, in the 600 words left in this column, I will try to craft my own "Idiots Guide to Chinagate," dedicated to all those busy folks like you and me whose attention span tends to peter out after about 750 words. Here goes.
When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, China presented little threat to the United States. Chinese missiles "couldnt hit the side of a barn," notes Timothy W. Maier of Insight magazine. Few could reach North America and those that made it would likely miss their targets.
Thanks to Bill Clinton, China can now hit any city in the USA, using state-of-the-art, solid-fueled missiles with dead-accurate, computerized guidance systems and multiple warheads.
China probably has suitcase nukes as well. These enable China to strike by proxy equipping nuclear-armed terrorists to do their dirty work, while the Chinese play innocent. Some intelligence sources claim that China maintains secret stockpiles of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons on U.S. soil, for just such contingencies.
In 1997, Clinton allowed China to take over the Panama Canal. The Chinese company Hutchison Whampoa leased the ports of Cristobal and Balboa, on the east and west openings of the canal respectively, thus controlling access both ways. A public outcry stopped Clinton in 1998 from leasing Californias Long Beach Naval Yard to the Chinese firm COSCO. Even so, China can now strike U.S. targets easily from their bases in Panama, Vancouver and the Bahamas.
How did China catch up so fast? Easy. We sold them all the technology they needed or handed it over for free. Neither neglect nor carelessness are to blame. Bill Clinton did it on purpose.
As a globalist, Clinton promotes "multipolarity" the doctrine that no country (such as the USA) should be allowed to gain decisive advantage over others.
To this end, Clinton appointed anti-nuclear activist Hazel OLeary to head the Department of Energy. OLeary set to work "leveling the playing field," as she put it, by giving away our nuclear secrets. She declassified 11 million pages of data on U.S. nuclear weapons and loosened up security at weapons labs.
Federal investigators [Cox Report] later concluded that China made off with the "crown jewels" of our nuclear weapons research under Clintons open-door policy probably including design specifications for suitcase nukes. Meanwhile, Clinton and his corporate cronies raked in millions.
In his book The China Threat, Washington Times correspondent Bill Gertz describes how the system worked. Defense contractors eager to sell technology to China poured millions of dollars into Clintons campaign. In return, Clinton called off the dogs.
Janet Reno and other counterintelligence officials stood down while Lockheed Martin, Hughes Electronics, Loral Space & Communications and other U.S. companies helped China modernize its nuclear strike force.
"We like your president. We want to see him reelected," former Chinese intelligence chief General Ji Shengde told Chinagate bagman Johnny Chung. Indeed, Chinese intelligence organized a massive covert operation aimed at tilting the 1996 election Clintons way.
Clintons top campaign contributors for 1992 were Chinese agents; his top donors in 1996 were U.S. defense contractors selling missile technology to China.
Clinton recieved funding directly from known or suspected Chinese intelligence agents, among them James and Mochtar Riady who own the Indonesian Lippo Group; John Huang; Charlie Trie; Ted Sioeng; Maria Hsia; Wang Jun and others.
Commerce Secretary Ron Brown served as Clintons front man in many Chinagate deals. When investigators began probing Browns Lippo Group and Chinagate connections, Brown died suddenly in a suspicious April 1996 plane crash.
Needless to say, China does not share Clintons enthusiasm for globalism or multipolarity. The Chinese look out for Number One.
"War [with the United States] is inevitable; we cannot avoid it," said Chinese Defense Minister General Chi Haotian in 2000. "The issue is that the Chinese armed forces must control the initiative in this war." Bill Clinton has given them a good start.

From a 2003 Washington Post article:
"...a statement [Bill] Clinton made in February 2002, in which he told an audience in Australia, 'This is a unique moment in U.S. history, a brief moment in history, when the U.S. has preeminent military, economic and political power. It won't last forever. This is just a period, a few decades this will last.'
Clinton continued...
'In all probability, we won't be the premier political and economic power we are now' in a few decades, he said, pointing to the growth of China's economy and the growing economic strength of the European Union.
Whether the United States maintains its military supremacy, he said, depends in part on how much those other entities invest in their militaries, and Clinton said working cooperatively is essential to U.S. interests.
But he said he did not want to be misunderstood. 'I never advocated that we not have the strongest military in the world...I don't think a single soul has thought I was advocating scaling back our military.'

How charming. How fitting.
This is obviously about the woman’s vote. How do you think Clinton won in the first place.
I guess reminding people of the last time we had a good economy and a budget surplus could be a bad idea.
little willy did a fantastic job sabotaging hillary in the last election. If he can do half as well for oscumma, go for it.
He's absolutely NO use for this guy
Bill Clinton has always been a dragdown on whoever he campaigns for. I remember one of the reasons the GOP won big in 1994, was because Clinton was out campaigning for Democrat Representatives and Senators. While time has faded the memories of Clinton’s shenanigans from the American public, I think that the minute he opens up his mouth, all the bad memories will come flooding back again.
Let’s admit it; this will help the Obama campaign. Sad to say.
1) Clintons own words show his often expressed innate hostility to, and utter contempt for, the core principles of the American founding:
``If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the governments ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees. -- President Bill Clinton, August 12, 1993
``The purpose of government is to reign in the rights of the people - Bill Clinton during an interview on MTV in 1993
``We cant be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans that we forget about reality. -- President Bill Clinton, quoted in USA Today, March 11, 1993, Page 2A, ``NRA change: `Omnipotent to powerful by Debbie Howlett
When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Americans, it was assumed that the Americans who had that freedom would use it responsibly that they would work for the common good, as well as for the individual welfare However, now theres a lot of irresponsibility. And so a lot of people say theres too much freedom. When personal freedoms being abused, you have to move to limit it. Bill Clinton, April 19, 1995
2) Clinton inevitably pursued his own political advantage at the expense of American interests and national security. Here is just one of many possible examples:
It is well documented that Clinton and the Democrats took illegal campaign money from groups and individuals tied directly to the Chinese Peoples Republican Army. It is therefore not surprising that In January 1998 Clinton went against the advice of then-Secretary of State Warren Christopher and Pentagon experts by lifting long-standing restrictions against the export of American satellites to China for launch on Chinese rockets. Not only did he move control over such decisions from the more security-focused State Department to the Commerce Department, but he intervened in a Justice Department investigation of Loral Space & Communications, retroactively enabling Loral to sell critical missile technology to the Chinese. Interestingly enough, Clintons decision was made at the request of Loral CEO Bernard Schwartz, whose earlier $1.3 million campaign donation made him the single biggest contributor to the Democratic election effort.
The result, as stated eloquently by syndicated columnist Linda Bowles, was that the Democrats got money from satellite companies and from Chinese communists; China got supercomputors, advanced production equipment and missile technology; Loral got its satellites launched at bargain basement prices . . . and the transfer of sensitive missile technology gave China [for the first time] the capability of depositing bombs on American cities. Incidentally, Loral ultimately failed to benefit from this permanent injury to Americas security interests: in July 2003, the company filed for bankruptcy protection, and in order to raise cash was forced to sell its most profitable business a fleet of communications satellites orbiting over North America.
3) On two occasions, Clinton used military action for the specific purpose of distracting the American public from the fallout of the Lewinsky affair:
On August 20, three days after Clinton finally admitted publicly to the Lewinsky affair, the news media was poised to focus on that days grand jury testimony by Monica Lewinsky. That same morning, Clinton personally went on national television to gravely announce his bombing of a Sudanese chemical weapons factory, and a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. It was the first time most Americans ever heard the name of Osama bin Laden. The factory bombing in Sudan killed an innocent night watchman, but accomplished little else. It later was proven that the plant was making badly needed pharmaceuticals for people in that poverty-stricken part of the world, but no chemical weapons.
Several months later, the U.S. Center for Nonproliferation Studies, part of the Monterey Institute of International Studies, stated: "...the evidence indicates that the facility had no role whatsoever in chemical weapons development." Kroll Associates, one of the world's most reputable investigative firms, also confirmed that there was no link in any way between the plant and any terrorist organization. As for the Afghanistan bombing, it failed to do any damage at all to bin Laden or his organization. Clintons action was accurately characterized by George W. Bush when he said right after 9-11: "When I take action, Im not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt.
Clintons pointless and murderous military actions did not make Americans safer that day, although they did destroy an innocent life, and for all the good they did certainly could have been delayed in any case. But they did succeed in diverting media attention from Lewinskys grand jury testimony for a 24-hour news cycle, which was the main point. So I guess, they werent a total loss.
On December 16, 1998, on the eve of the scheduled House vote on his impeachment, Bill Clinton launched a surprise bombing attack on Baghdad. As justification for this exploit, he cited the urgent threat that Saddams weapons of mass destruction posed to America, and the need for immediate action. Almost immediately, the House Democrats held a caucus and emerged calling for a delay in the impeachment proceedings. House minority leader Dick Gephardt made a statement: "We obviously should pass a resolution by saying that we stand behind the troops. I would hope that we do not take up impeachment until the hostilities have completely ended."
Conveniently, a delay so near the end of the House term would have caused the vote to be taken up in the next session when the newly elected House membership would be seated with more Democratic representation, thereby improving Clintons chances of dodging impeachment.
The Republicans did, in fact, agree to delay the hearings, but only for a day or two. Amazingly, Clinton ended the bombing raid after only 70 hours -- once it became clear that in spite of the brief delay, the vote would still be held in the current session.
Once the bombing stopped, Clinton touted the effectiveness and importance of the mission. As reported by ABC News : We have inflicted significant damage on Saddam's weapons of mass destruction programs, on the command structures that direct and protect that capability, and on his military and security infrastructure, he said. Defense secretary William Cohen echoed the point: We estimate that Saddam's missile program has been set back by at least a year.
Whether or not one buys Clintons assessment of that mission, it is difficult to believe that its timing was so critical that it required commencement virtually at the moment the House was scheduled to vote on the impeachment. I think the most reasonable conclusion is that Clinton cynically deployed US military assets and placed military personnel in harms way for purely political reasons.
4) Clintons reckless sexual behavior was a threat to American national security:
Clinton and his supporters have been very effective in persuading large numbers of Americans that the Lewinsky scandal was only about sex. But I see a bigger issue here, because Clinton is on record as saying that he would have done anything to keep knowledge of the Lewinsky affair from becoming public.
To me, that statement raises a very serious question: What if, instead of sending her recorded Lewinsky conversations to Ken Starr, Linda Tripp had instead secretly offered them for sale, say, to the Chinese government? Or to the Russians? Or even to agents of Saddam?
What kind of blackmail leverage would those tapes have provided to a foreign government in dealing with America on sensitive trade, security or military issues? One of the few things Clinton ever said that I believe is that he would have done anything to keep the Lewinsky affair secret. Given his demonstrated track record of selling out American interests for personal or political gain (and there are more examples that I could have cited here), how far would he have gone in compromising Americas real interests in order to protect his own neck when threatened with blackmail?
Pretty far, I believe. Equally distressing is the prospect Clinton might, in fact, have succumbed to foreign black mail on other occasions in order to hide different sexual episodes that ultimately did not become public. There is no way to know, of course, but I prefer presidents for whom such a scenario is not a plausible possibility.
And dont even get me started on the war crime in Kosovo.
“This is obviously about the womans vote. How do you think Clinton won in the first place.”
This is about “white” votes (male & female); don’t see it doing much for Obama - could even hurt him. BJ’s endorsement and campaigning has to be offset by his comments on Obama during the previous primary.
Bill Clinton committed numerous felony crimes in an attempt to fix an American court case in which he was the defendant and an American WOMAN was the plantiff.
As sitting President, Bill Clinton attempted to deny an American woman Justice.
This being true. please explain to me how would having Bill Clinton campaign for the totalitarian wanna be Barack Obama garner votes from the American women?
Later
"In April 1985 [Leon] Panetta joined with 13 of his leftist congressional colleagues including Ron Dellums, Don Edwards, George Miller, Christopher Dodd, and Les Aspin in sponsoring a 20th anniversary fund-raising gala for the pro-Marxist Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), which had been described by Brian Crozier, director of the London Institute for the Study of Conflict, as the "perfect intellectual front for Soviet activities which would be resisted if they were to originate openly from the KGB." The IPS was originally funded with millions of dollars from the Faberge perfume magnate and Communist Party member Samuel Rubin and his wife."
"Readers who recall the movement to impeach Bill Clinton remember that one of the charges raised by Clinton's critics was the conflict of interest created when individuals connected with the Chinese Overseas Shipping Company (COSCO) such as John Huang, Charles Trie, and James and Mochtar Riady helped funnel contributions to the Clinton reelection campaign. Afterwards, the Clinton administration lobbied for granting COSCO a 10-year lease on the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard in California.
During a March 1997 edition of CNBC's Equal Time program, California Republican State Senator Dick Mountjoy noted that COSCO-linked arms dealer Wang Jun had been granted personal access to President Clinton, and that Wang's business associates had smuggled illegal assault weapons into California for delivery to street gangs by making use of a ship owned and operated by COSCO.
Mountjoy then stated:
The next thing you know, (then-Chief of Staff) Leon Panetta is down here negotiating that port for the Chinese.
There is much more to the COSCO-Long Beach connection than we have room for here, but a good summary of the threat the arrangement made to U.S. security may be found in an item inserted into the Congressional Record by Rep. Gerald B.H. Solomon on May 20, 1997.
Even the most unbiased of observers may legitimately ask: Why on Earth is an individual who helped negotiate the turnover of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard to the communist Chinese, thereby creating the threat to U.S. national security described in the Washington Times article by Rowan Scarborough and inserted into the Congressional Record by Rep. Solomon, being considered for a top position at one of our nation's most critical intelligence agencies?"

Profile: Institute For Policy Studies (IPS)
IPSs [Institute For Policy Studies] Washington, DC headquarters quickly became a resource center for national reporters and a place for KGB agents from the nearby Soviet embassy to convene and strategize. Cora Weiss headed one of the IPS's most successful forays -- into Riverside Church in Manhattan. She was invited there in 1978 by the Reverend William Sloane Coffin to run the church's Disarmament Program, which sought to consolidate Soviet nuclear superiority in Europe -- in the name of "peace." In 1982 Weiss helped organize the largest pro-disarmament demonstration ever held. Staged in New York City, the rally was attended by a coalition of communist organizations.
During her decade-long tenure at Riverside, which became home to the National Council of Churches, Weiss regularly received Russian KGB agents, Sandinista friends, and Cuban intelligence agents. Weiss became infamous for her role in the psychological warfare conducted against U.S. prisoners of war held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War.
The Liberation News Service, which is a news source for hundreds of "alternative" publications nationwide (with antiwar, Marxist-oriented perspectives), was founded in 1967 with IPS assistance."

You are absolutely right....and realistic.
Last night, in a clip from an interview by Bill O'Reilly a couple years ago, the recently-deceased Mike Wallace stated that if Bill Clinton would and could run again for president, he'd be elected.
Wallace was correct. The politically-uneducated in the American electorate always has had and always will suffer from collective amnesia when it comes to errant but notable Democrats.
To them, Clinton is not a threat....and he's a strong, nice-looking, benevolent, sincere and charming fellow who plays the sax.
He will definitely draw TV attention, audiences and crowds when he speaks on behalf of Obama in the upcoming campaign.
He's probably the only politician campaigning for Obama that has a measure of "star" power and the ability to influence independents.
Leni
Nevertheless...he's a winner to them...and a vote getter.
Thanks!

BJ’s appeal to women was that the miserable divorced ones always saw him as a prospective date.
