Inmates on death row do not know when they will be executed until the last minute, while family members and lawyers are only told afterward.Pretty much takes care of the problem of too many whining hippies gathering with candles and bongo drums.

I recall hearing the Japanese hanging method is an 18 inch drop. Not enough to break the neck. Dangle and strangle.

If only they were so lucky...in feudal Japan only members of the Samurai class were executed by decapitation, usually via Seppuku. Lower class criminals, miscreants, and offenders were usually crucified or boiled alive.

Still beats Iran - lifting you off the ground by crane, having you stand on a bus or truck and having it drive out from under you, etc.

Stoning and partial decapitation are pretty unpleasant too.

Since we were talking about Japan and comparing cultural aspects to Islamic countries, the other day.
Worth reading the entire article, plus 2 photos there.
Decapitation (guillotine type) is still a quicker death than hanging. If am not mistaken, sunnis/wahhabis (e.g. Saudis) still use decapitation (with a sword) as opposed to Iranian regime, who hang people, mind you, they both execute in full public view (unlike the Japs).

Enjoyed this snippet:
The move is likely to spark debate over the countrys support of the death penalty which at 86 per cent remains astonishingly high. Maybe it never occurred to the editorializing news reporter that the reason it is "astonishingly high" is because the Japanese have low tolerance for murderous criminals. Furthermore, said low tolerance is one of the reasons why they have the lowest incidence of such crimes in the industrial world.
