Failure of Rosie O'Donnell's show on Oprah Winfrey's network is evidence that OWN has problems

The Rosie O’Donnell show was supposed to be the magnet that would draw big numbers of viewers to Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable network — before it ended up a big flop.

Insiders blame the failure of the show on a lack of support from the network, and a lack of experience on the part of Winfrey’s Harpo-based team doing anything other than a show built around Winfrey.

“Initially, we had a lot of support,” says one show insider, who can’t be named because of a confidentiality agreement. “The first week we heard everything went well. But after the premiere week we started to hear less and less from OWN.”

Winfrey and her team were banking on O’Donnell to pull viewers into the fledgling network as it struggled to get an audience.

If Oprah doesn't start covering half of the network's losses, Discovery Networks is going to pull the plug. Grab some popcorn.

I think her people were afraid to tell her that this wouldn’t work.
She’ll probably go the GBTV route but she needs to be the front and center talent.

She could hire RUSH.
RUSH would not go with her. . . . .
So OKRA is fried. . . . .

Being a pay channel doesn’t help.

Oprah caused her own downfall when she showed what a racist she was during the last election.

My take is that there are a lot of older white women who have woken up to the fact that they got “taken” by Oprah on Obama. They are not happy with her.

Add to this that those who aren’t in that group are then natural Obama voters, and therefore not smart enough to find OWN in all the noise in the upper reaches of cable.

Double whammy.

“It was a top-heavy show, and Rosie didn’t really respect all the people from Harpo,” said another show staffer. “Sure, she was difficult, but what talent isn’t? There was a lack of effective management. Oprah was really in the background, letting it all happen.”

Heh...reading the rest of the story, it's clear that they still don't have a clue about why it failed.

Oprah’s BIG mistake was timing. Her career peaked at about 10 years ago.

No sense in beating around the Bush. Bad enough Oprah hired a Bull Dyke to do a show, But a fat, ugly, nasty, Bull Dyke to boot.

Nobody wants to watch that sack of crap make a fool of herself day after day.

They can toss blame around forever, but the fact is Rosie was the problem.

On your first point, I agree totally.

“Add to this that those who aren’t in that group are then natural Obama voters, and therefore not smart enough to find OWN in all the noise in the upper reaches of cable.”

The Obama voters are the entitlement crowd. When she was on the regular network they could get her show for free. Now you have to have cable or satellite to watch her BS. They haven't yet declared satellite/cable TV as a basic right so she lost a lot of viewers.

LOL However—I think it’s a matter of it not being free. Now if the government would pay for it....

a lot longer ago, oprah had an episode I could not believe what she was doing. all the white women were told to stand and apologize to the black women for slavery. i refused to watch the show after that. none of the women in that studio owned slaves.

Winfrey and her team were banking on O’Donnell to pull viewers into the fledgling network as it struggled to get an audience.

Who would think that - O'Donnell is radioactive and malignant. The only viewers she would draw would be from the middle-aged angry overweight lesbian demographic.

I never heard of that show. I'd love to see that segment make it to Youtube. Maybe some of the Oprah lovers would wake up.

All of OWN’s programs are the same crappy gabfest- or reality-based shows you can get for free on the big networks. Who would pay? There aren’t that many idiots out there.

Oprah is a victim of her OWN ego.

My memory isn't as good as it once was (but it's good once as it ever was) but didn't Rosie's (cough) 'career' take a nose dive after she *came out* and became a real Lesbo-Nazi. Granted having a show on OWN doesn't help as nobody can find that STOO-PID channel on cable if they wanted to.

There's TV shows on cable I'd like to watch regularly like on -- shooting-guns, general outdoors shows, bass fishing, etc., but I can't find them more than once. The problem as I see it is there's too many channels on cable and no good directory.

Just glancing at Oprah’s Facebook page, I believe that Oprah herself has problems.

First clue re Oprah's problem was 'choice' of Rosie O'Donnell. Wondered then; 'what was she thinking' - (and what deomgraphic did she imagine here). Bad sign; and desperation; no excuse.
