When it comes to organ music, Johann Sebastian Bach is the gold standard. In addition to the work he did at Leipzig and Cõthen (pronounced much like “curtain”), Bach went around to various German cities as an organ consultant, evaluating new organs and telling the church authorities what needed to be improved. Like every organist throughout musical history, Bach was able to improvise freely and write down what he had just played. Bach’s autograph scores show amazingly precise calligraphy. You can play the piece right off a Bach hand-written score.

The most popular of his organ pieces is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which had been arranged for a whole variety of instruments to include full orchestra. As a comment notes on the video, this is old school heavy metal.

Note that the organist requires a second person to handle the various stops on the organ. The camera also shows the complexity of the pedal work.

When the mulatto violinist George Bridgetower sat down with Beethoven to prepare his Kreutzer Sonata for the first performance, Bridgetower was surprised to learn that Beethoven was fluent in English. But Beethoven’s English was full of “thee”, “thou”, “prithee”, and “Marry, sir!” Bridgetower had a difficult time not laughing when Beethoven tried out his Elizabethan English.

What Bridgetower didn’t know was that Beethoven had a deal with the London publishing firm of Boozey & Hawkes to write arrangements of English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk tunes for the home market. Every middle class family had keyboard and string players, and usually someone who thought he could sing. The deal was that B&H would pay up front in gold, and they would not put Beethoven’s name on the printed volumes. This was a way for Beethoven to make some quick cash.

The first volume was pure hack work, but something happened when he started work on the second volume: Beethoven really got into it. The arrangements show not only care, but genius. This was how Beethoven learned to speak his quaint, archaic English.
