NATCHITOCHES, La., March 14, 2012It was a good night for Rick Santorum. It was not a good night for Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich is a zombie.
President Obama might want to celebrate tonights election results in the morning with a nice bowl of grits for breakfast.
Gingrichs southern strategy is dead, and so is his campaign. The only southerner in the race, hes said all along that the South would help him to the nomination. ... He came in a close second in both, results that would be respectable if he had more wins to his credit. But he doesnt. Theres no way Gingrich can spin the nights results into victory.
Nor can Romney, but his campaign remains very much alive. The mathematics of the delegate race didnt demand that he win if he and Santorum traded results, the effect would be a gain of only seven delegates for Romney but a victory in either state would have been a definite boost. He won some delegates, and if he wins Hawaii and American Samoa, as is widely expected, his delegate lead will grow, but the losses still hurt, and they illustrate a serious weakness.
Romney could have won in Mississippi, and even Alabama wasnt out of reach. He had sufficient support on paper to win, and the spread between him and Santorum was actually quite narrow. Between him and Gingrich the gap was even narrower, and second-place would have been just fine. But his supporters werent sufficiently supportive to actually go out and vote. He showed, if anyone needed showing, that his support is a mile wide and an inch deep. His supporters preferred to stay home and watch CSI, and so Romney came in third.

Newt's sitting at the table, holding conservative cards in his hand and Mitt is sitting at the table with his hand of flip-flops; Rick is still trying to arrange his cards.
You may think you know how this is going to conclude but I am not ready to.
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now?
Newt is the man the establishment fears which makes me wonder..do they really want to make huge changes and turn this country around or do they want to just go along to get along?
As long as Newt keeps fighting for Reagan’s conservative principles, like Sarah Palin does, I will continue to be with him.
Moderate Mitt is no Reagan-Palin conservative. Neither is Santorum. He may mouth the words but his record proves otherwise.
If an open convention will deny the nomination to the candidate the GOP establishment tried to force on me, then I’m all for it!
I always look forward to your posts. Full of information and facts all in one place. Thanks for the great work you have done for Newt.
AMEN Christie
he’s not an old man and pot bellied to boot?... image is part of the game, sad but true... If he was interested in running for president, he should’ve lost 40 pounds two years ago... tell me I’m wrong. I’d vote for him if he were my grandpa, of course...
After last night, do you think the Romney people will unleash everything on Santorum? I can sense the growing desperation in the Romney/GOPe/Fox campaign. I agree with you that Romney has been holding back.
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man’s company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
...
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day. King Henry V, IV, 3
I don’t care if you’re comments were wrong or right.
I do know they’re obtuse and tacky.
Bump!
Newt! Newt! Newt!
:)
Newt told Bret Baier on FOX last night that his staying in the race dilutes romney's money when it comes to attack ads.
He is correct, the romney super pac must shoot at two targets and it spreads their funds.
Newt is in the DC race and Santorum isn't so Newt can give Rick cover and at least force mittens to spend time and money.
Don't give up on the idea man, if Newt stays in and no one gets 1144 committed delegates, when the convention opens Tampa, mittens will not pick up any more delegates and there will be delegate swapping and cross over between Newt and Rick and maybe even the crazy uncle from Texas.
There is nothing wrong with an open convention and remember, a can of tomato soup can beat the halfrican, communist prick, if we just make the election about his record.
Gingrich becomes the fly-in-the-ointment in the winner-take-all states.
If he stays in and keeps Santorum from winning those states, Romney could end the cycle with enough delegates to go into the convention with a win.
Now, Gingrich sees himself as king-maker. But that will only work if he doesn’t becomes the Hucka-hanger-on and end up causing Romney to get enough delegates.
Me too. Until he gives up, I'm for Newt. He is by far the best man for the job.
First thing I do every morning is grab a cup of coffee and come on FR to read your posts:))
YOU rock!
LOL! that is too funny..sad rain...thanks for the laugh:)
Who gave you a crystal ball?
