It was 50% last month and despite relatively good economic news lately, this doesn't seem to correlate into higher numbers for the president.

"President Obama's approval rating has hit the lowest level ever in CBS News polling, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times survey. The drop may be partially attributable to rising gas prices.
Just 41 percent of Americans approve of the job Mr. Obama is doing as president, according to the poll, conducted from March 7 to 11. Another 47 percent disapprove of his performance, up from 41 percent last month.
Mr. Obama's approval rating was 50 percent last month. The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has jumped 12 cents over the past two weeks. The poll found that most Americans, 54 percent, believe gas prices are something a president can do a lot about.
Americans have historically felt that a president can control gas prices, though experts attribute changes to a variety of factors, many outside of a president's control. They also felt this way when gas prices spiked during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

Mr. Obama's job rating on the economy remains about the same as it was last month - 39 percent approve, while 54 percent disapprove.
The economy and jobs remains the most important problem facing the country today, according to 51 percent of Americans. Three in four Americans think the economy is at least somewhat bad, including 30 percent who say it is very bad.

Actually, the time to have done something about gas prices was three years ago when he first took office. Of course there's little he can do now except open the spigot on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve -

The good news is, his approval rating is dropping, as it should. The bad news is, the public is only marginally aware. They’re angry about gas prices. As the gas prices continue to go up, they’ll get even more upset, as it’s one of the few things of substance that the public notices.
In October, when gas prices ease to $3.50/gallon, all will be well, the public will be thrilled at what Obama has done for him, and will march to the polls and make the “smart” choice, as directed by the enemedia.
March 7-11...Sheriff Arpaio obama investigation filtering out from a lamestream blockage...Andrew Breitbart and friends starting to vet the anti-white communist in the white house...gas prices going up.
The bad news? Even with his job approval headed down the toilet, O still leads all four GOP candidates head to head. The good news? If CBS is right about gas prices weighing down his ratings, and they probably are, then The One’s hand might be forced on approving the Keystone pipeline if prices don’t start to ease soon. Go read John McCormack’s post at the Standard, too, arguing that the contraception fight isn’t hurting the GOP as much as the conventional wisdom would have you believe. Hard to say if these numbers bear that out. Obama leads all Republicans among women by double digits even as his overall numbers crumble — but then there’s this:
When you ask people, “Should religious employers be required to cover contraception?”, 61 percent will tell you yes. When you add the magic words “opt out,” you get the data set you see above. Makes me wonder how closely most voters are following the contraception debate in the first place. If slight tweaks in wording can turn the numbers upside down, the public’s probably not paying close attention, which may mean there’s fertile ground for Democratic “war on women” demagoguery. That moronic “permission slip” on Obama’s Tumblr account was no accident.
Oh, almost forgot: Another trillion-dollar deficit this year. Probably no poll damage to him from that, though. Yawn.
And if gas prices drop between now and November?
Rassy is showing his “strong approve” number up to 28% today, and his “rating” at -14.
sure are a lot of uninformed people in america or else there is a whold bunch depending on the dole..
“If slight tweaks in wording can turn the numbers upside down, the publics probably not paying close attention ... “
I have a very low opinion of the American public. I’d suggest that the public is not only not paying attention, they’re doing their darnedest to ignore anything that sounds like real news, or requires any thought.
Business Insider makes this observation:

Two polls today (WaPo and CBS/NYT) confirm it: Obama’s approval ratings have tanked over the past several days.
There’s something weird going on in both, however.
As you’d expect, both have a sharp drop in approval of Obama’s handling of the economy.
In the new, CBS/NYT one, his support on this measure dropped from 44% to 39%. The WaPo one is similar: 44% to 38%.
And yet... in neither poll is there actually a deterioration in the way people view the economy itself.
In the latest one (.pdf), the % of people saying the economy was “fairly good” fell from 22% to 21%. Hardly a major drop. And in fact the % of people saying the economy was performing fairly bad dropped from 46% to 45%, so it’s not clear that there’s been any deterioration at all. And on the one from this morning, people’s outlook on the economy actually rose from the previous polling.
So on both polls you see Obama taking hits on his performance in managing the economy, but not a major drop in how people view the economy itself.
So it’s a little hard to gauge the sentiment of folks right now, but you can’t discount what two polls, which have such consistent results are saying.
In the meantime...
Gallup’s US Economic Confidence tracking poll show confidence surging in just the last several days.

The Collapse In Obama’s Approval occurs even as the economy seems to be improving...
It’s sinking him just like it did Carter.
Barry is however a pragmatic weasel. He has no problem throwing his closest allies under the bus when they drag his poll numbers too low (see: Wright, Jeremiah)
Look for him to reverse himself on the Keystone Pipeline and Gulf drilling, and then try to take credit. The votes gained will more than offset the lost donations from Enviros.
He will however put a few futures traders through a kangaroo court to placate OWS.
Rasmussen has Zero at 49% approval. Scott...try polling outside of Memphis, Harlem, and Chicago...
“The Collapse In Obamas Approval occurs even as the economy seems to be improving...”
It’s difficult to measure the American public’s disposition at any given time.
Since the 52% gave us the first four years of Obama, and the significant percentage of freepers who resolve not to vote if their candidate isn’t nominated, I have little respect for the public, and no confidence that Obama can be unseated.
The Potemkin Economy he is trying to create is not fooling anybody, even libs.................
Not likely to happen unless the dollar gets stronger, the Euro tanks and the Chinese get all warm and fuzzy over green energy...............
While high gas prices are likely a millstone around Obama’s neck, Mittens Romney on a national apology tour offering nothing more than to “work with” Obama and “reach across the aisle in Congress” to solve the country’s problems could still put Obama back in the White House.
“And if gas prices drop between now and November?”
Obama will then be hailed as a hero. He will lead a triumphal march while adorned with a wreath of olive branches upon his head, as befitting a champion. He will have a worthy opponent of his choosing strangled to death before the cheering crowds as an appeasement to the gods and to show his power over life and death, done much to the delight of the masses. To show his generosity and benevolence he will toss EBT cards out to the peasants. As he rides through the streets on a chariot there will be a servant standing next to him, whispering in his ear, “Thou are but mortal... Thou are but mortal...”
Obama will not believe a word of it, of course, as he proclaims himself to be dictator for life and awaits the Senate to offer him a crown and declare him both emperor and devine .
Both, but, the second is a fact I believe.
Liberals in the Pacific Northwest would be overjoyed. All products would increase in retail pricing, but food would be delivered from organic farms on bicycles.
Maybe the liberal dream is for all of us to live the Amish lifestyle, but without faith of any kind other than Gaia worship.
