Woman reportedly arrested for painting fingernails on Southwest Airlines flight
FoxNews ^ | February 7, 2012

A California woman on a Southwest Airlines flight was reportedly arrested and detained after a verbal confrontation with a flight attendant regarding her nail polish.

Jeanie Daniels told WOFL that she was painting her nails in her seat on a Southwest Airlines flight from California to Texas last month when a flight attendant asked her to stop. Daniels then went to the bathroom to finish and later began arguing with the flight attendant, who waited outside the bathroom.

Daniels was handcuffed and detained for more than 10 hours when the flight landed in Houston.

"She started screaming at me and wouldn't stop,” Daniels told the station. "I said I'm sorry, I apologize and I put it away. About ten minutes into the flight I discovered I only had two nails left to paint so I thought well if I went to the bathroom and did it, it wouldn't offend anyone."

They should have tossed her out a door.

SW has some of the worst TV ads. Reminds me of TV shows of Ad Council spots.

This is just another case of an ignorant person being granted too much authority, ie, the flight attendant..

My daughter's friend is a flight attendant, and she has to put up with a lot from rude passengers. It's a stressful job, especially since 9/11.

As far as the nail polish, it has an odor, and could get messy on an airplane. I would not appreciate someone using it if I'm sitting next to them.

She defied the flight attendant by going into the restroom and doing it there. On top of that, she was cursing.

Go to a nail salon. The technicians all wear face masks for a variety of reasons.

These articles fascinate me. The media prints the 'facts' given by one party to the altercation - who clearly has an agenda. No independent witness is interviewed. Based on this, we're asked to decide what happened.

Really, Daniels was asked to stop painting her nails, simply apologized and stopped. There was no verbal sparring the first time, before Daniels went to the restroom? Daniels didn't ask why, or complain, or say she only had two nails left, or anything else? She just apologized, I see, and stopped. Okayyyyyyy.

I don’t deny that SOME (but not most)FA’s become power mad and abuse passengers.

However, this does not seem to be one of those cases. Painting one’s nails in airline cabin is horrendously rude to the other passengers, and poses some level of safety risk, and there is probably a rule against it.

The FA asked the woman to stop, but then she snuck into the bathroom and continued. I think they were too easy on her. She should have been ejected from the plane, at 30,000 feet. :)

Lot of BS comments on this thread.

Nail polish highly flammable?
Nail polish highly toxic?
The ‘authority’ of stewardesses?

Just a lot of hot air again from the FR knee-jerkers and wannabe cops.

Actually, she wasn’t even arrested.

She was detained for 10 hours and finally let go with no charges.

All in all, I think she got what’s coming to her. You don’t screw around on a flight like she did and get away with it.

(I know - I know. 20 years ago this would have been a non-issue, but we live in a totally different couuntry than we did 20 years ago.)

I tend to read articles “as is,” and not assume.

I understand. The article said:

Daniels told the station. "I said I'm sorry, I apologize and I put it away.

So it doesn't say she apologized and put it away. It says Daniels told the station that.

I refer you to my comment #27. It appears to me that she was told to stop, and then resumed.

I suppose she could have asked to resume in the bathroom, in which case she would've been told, "no."

There is no big deal.. its all about control with the airlines these days. They are not happy unless they boss you around and stomp on you with jackboots.

Its the number one reason I will not fly anymore.

First, we had the unalienable right to contraception, and only days later we have the unalienable right to pollute an aircraft cabin.

... everyone has to smell the odor of the fingernail paint for the duration of the flight.

Not true. Else everyone would smother to death on a long flight due to CO2 buildup. Fresh air is continuously fed into airliners during flight, and at a fairly decent volume.

That being said, those around her would have been inconvenienced for the time it takes to flush out the odors.

If everyone paints gets to paint their fingers and toes; what do you suppose the plane will smell like? And, if 5% of these folks spill the paint container due to air turbulence, what do you suppose the seats, carpets, cabin and trays will look like?

Would you are to sit in a seat, that is wet from fingernail paint, because some woman decided to pain her nails, and the container spilled? Or, would you like to be the person who gets left behind, because the seat you were assigned is ‘temporarily’ out of service because of an obliviot?

The attendant asked her to stop painting - and the passenger decided that she was entitled to continue - so we’ll let the courts decide. I fly a bit more than the average person - about 2x a month. I’ve never seen someone rude enough to paint on an airplane.

Finger nail paint is the least of your worries especially when some five year old cuts an air biscuit after two bags of peanuts....Gaaak!

I’ll take an inconsiderate female painting her nails over some dirtbag who has no concept of hygiene.

The smell will linger, awhile.

But, spilling a vial of fingernail polish will ruin the carpet, seat, cabin walls and the tray. It will be a huge mess, and will require that the seats be removed and replaced - same thing with the carpet.

Overall, it’s just a rude thing to do, not courteous to any of the other passengers at all.
