Teacher Suspended Over Chicken Nugget Incident

School district official says substituting a preschooler’s lunch was against district policy

RALEIGH — The teacher involved in “supplementing” a preschooler’s lunch with chicken nuggets in Hoke County has been suspended indefinitely.

Parents of students in the Pre-Kindergarten program at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford got a letter from Assistant Superintendent Bob Barnes last week saying a substitute teacher would take over the preschool class until the “issue” is resolved.

It remains unclear why the teacher’s actions violated district policy. State officials responsible for monitoring homemade lunches for preschoolers have told Carolina Journal that the Jan. 30 incident that caused a nationwide uproar satisfied state policy.

The letter (PDF) from Barnes, dated Feb. 28, reads as follows:

“As I am sure you are aware, we recently experienced an unfortunate situation where a failure to follow district policy resulted in the substitution of a Pre-K student’s lunch at West Hoke Elementary School. This letter is to inform you that Ms. Emma Thomas will be a substitute in [your child’s] classroom until we can bring resolution to this issue. We are pleased that [your child] is enrolled in our Pre-K program and we are confident that Ms. Thomas will continue to provide [him or her] with a very positive educational experience.”

The mother of the 4-year-old girl whose turkey sandwich was replaced by chicken nuggets says the teacher is not to blame and shouldn’t be punished.

Unless they refrigerate the kids’ brown bag lunches, how can they expect the lunch to contain milk ? Nobody likes milk warm.

Oh boo hoo. “Suspended” with pay I’m sure and continued lifetime pension and health coverage.

Fire the facist *itch. Take her future away.

The parents should sue this bimbo for the rest of her life so she has to spend eternity in courts.

What ever happened to tar and feathers?

The school board, superintendent, principle, etc. of these shcools need to be removed. Come on people, vote them out.

How many votes does a super get in a school district? Can’t be too hard to vote them and the useless board out (these a-holes are no different than commies and home owner association board members).

Yes, she deliberately interfered with a lunch decision. Wrong, but hardly a high crime.

I’d say fire the ones that deserve it. If she can’t teach, can her. This lunch thing isn’t a good enough reason, though.

BS. She interfered with Parental authority, something no teacher has the right to do. Nothing is a higher crime than that in my book except maybe murder. Not only should she be fired(she won't be)but everyone up the line responsible for these unconstitutional rules should also be fired.

There is nothing in the constitution that gives these a**hats the rights to take a childs lunch and substitute their own version for it. People better wake up.

She performed an illegal search.

The Constitution guarantees freedom from search and seizure.

The law is invalid unless each search is conducted with a warrant based on probable cause

“Fire ‘em all, let Marx sort ‘em out? May I steal that?’

Thanks for the appreciative comment.

By all means, use it as you wish. Hopefully, it will become a widely held attitude, as only a major thinning of the herds of government employees can save the republic.

Can’t let parents who aren’t “in the know” get wind of the left’s totalitarian anti-parental rights bent.

There’s something suspicious about this latest chapter in the kindergarten lunch saga. When the story first broke there was aome Federal bureaucrat involved, who was actually the one who snatched the child’s lunch and condemned it. Today we get a story about a teacher taking the heat, now that the citizenry are riled and going for their pitchforks.

Could it be that once the story went viral and the heat began to rise, the Federal meddler vamoosed for DC after warning the school authorities not to implicate HIM or Obummer in the broohaha.

And don’t jump to conclusions about the “poor teacher” who was suspended. She’s very likely still drawing full pay. For all we know, the school board, quaking in their boots over Federal threats, sent the teacher to St. Lucia on a paid sabatical.

As CJ reported Feb. 23, Cecelia Ellerbe, a child care consultant who works for the DHHS division, noticed a violation of the state’s nutrition policy at West Hoke Elementary Jan. 26. Walston told CJ Ellerbe “observed the lunch routine” at the preschool, which “would typically include walking through the cafeteria area. She could have seen any items that had been placed on tables, but might not have seen all lunches,” Walston said.
