Rush Limbaugh has posted a statement on his website this afternoon, forwarded by his brother David (one of my friends on line), apologizing for calling Sandra Fluke an insulting name while discussing her claims. It’s impossible to retain the context of his apology by excerpting it, so I hope Rush will not mind me posting it in its entirety:
For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.
I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.
My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.
I think Rush did the right thing in apologizing to Fluke. However, let’s keep in mind that it was Fluke who made her sexual activity a matter of national political debate by insisting that the government pass laws and regulations forcing employers and insurers to provide her free contraception, and apparently as much as she and others demand. It’s Republicans who believe that contraception should remain a private affair, and that employers and insurers should be free to decide whether to cover contraception for their employees and customers or not. Democrats used Fluke to demand that those choices be stripped from private enterprises and instead be forced by the executive branch to entirely subsidize contraception.
That is the argument we should be making, as Republicans and conservatives. If you want your sexual choices to remain private, don’t use the government to force other people to subsidize them. Then we won’t have to turn the sex lives of Georgetown law school students into topics for political speculation.
Update: Along those same lines, does Donna Brazile also now oppose the government mandate to force employers and insurers to have a role in the decision to use contraception? She tweeted this message not too long ago (via Keder):
Agree! The government should have no role in contraception, and shouldn’t force employers or insurers to have a role in it, either. Keep it between the woman, her sexual partner, and her doctor. Well said.
Oh, wait, Brazile meant this in support of the mandate? She seems just as badly misinformed on the issue as her media colleagues … or as deliberately obtuse.
Doesn’t ANYONE remember the “PROUD TO BE A SLUT” rally last year??
They are PROUD to be sluts, but get all offended when someone calls them one.
My screen name tells something about my past. Rush really took hold of me when I first heard him 22 years ago.
But I’m more down to earth now.
I don’t worship Rush Limbaugh as my “God” but many others look to Rush, Glenn etc. to fill that void in their lives.
What’s scary is that many who follow media figures as gods claim to be really following the One in Heaven.
Some of you folks out there need to take some responsibility for your own lives and do some thinking on your own using Rush and Glenn to help plus the folks on FR and even the MSM.
Seeing the phony GOP RINO politicians schmooze with Joe and Mika in the morning on MSNBC opened up a lot of truth to me.
Please read (and save) my damning "J'accuse" of the Obama regime, Murdergate, and the liberal media establishment that protects the murdering leftist criminals.

Or maybe a feminazi, or both. At Georgetown law, she is the former president of Law Students for Reproductive Justice, an editor for the Journal of Gender and the Law, and vice president of the Women's Legal Alliance. She has a bachelor's degree in Feminist, Gender & Sexuality studies from Cornell.
I feel the same way.
Oh get over yourself!
The very instant that I read about this error in judgment,So, you didn't actually hear any of the 'bits'?
Like a lot of people?
I at least like to view the evidence before condemning a man ...
Money talks, and his sponsors were jumping ship as if it was the Titanic. He had too many sponsors anyway; they were 'bleeding' over into program-content time as a matter of fact (I guess not many people actually listen to Rush or 'hear' the program content) ...
The live 'pitches' (like for Carbonite) started a few years back (in case you had not noticed).
I agree. It was annoying. But on the other hand the silent majority out here will not forget those sponsors that jumped ship. They will crawl back to obscurity. We need that message out on those that caved.
Indeed, he should have doubled down.
Monday he should have shifted the focus to those who pimped this woman for their political agenda.

So you don’t like Rush’s business decision? Tough.

Unfortunately, the only person that has made things “tough” for himself is Rush by issuing that unnecessary apology. Now the radical lefties are going to circle the wagons with even more intensity against his sponsors and broadcast distributors and will not rest until drastic action is taken. Rush knows better than anyone how these evil nutjobs operate. That’s why I STILL can’t believe he apologized! Nonetheless, I will still back and support him 150% as should we all.

Whether women can get the pill at Wal-Mart for that price, or whether some get it elsewhere at a higher price, may make her a liar but it does not make her a slut. Seeking to have the pill included as part of health insurance does not make her slut either.
That is what Rush called her, and that is what this is about.

I think you’re missing the point... Look at what Sandra Fluke claimed before the congressional committee:
Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, thats practically an entire summers salary. 40% of the female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggle financially as a result of this policy.”
Rush’s response: “What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex, what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.”
****
Do you realize how much sex you would need to be having to run up a $3,000 contraceptive tab over a three-year period??? Sorry, but if this nutjob woman is going to demand before Congress that we the taxpayers should be picking up the tab for all this alleged promiscuity, then we have every right to judge the behavior for what it is... SLUTTY (or, at best, nymphomania)!

Rush had to shut this down, lose the battle, win the war. Sunday talk shows etc. His apology ends the talk about it, he stays on the air to fight on, and his audience learns about his liberal sponsors. In 240 days this will not be on voters minds.

I can pretty much guarantee the left will NOT let Rush’s apology end the discussion about this controversy. In fact, I predict it will only further intensify it in the coming days as the leftists double down on continuing to go after his sponsors. Always remember, LEFT-WINGERS DO NOT ACCEPT APOLOGIES FROM CONSERVATIVES.

Today, we lost the election, and the country.
No we didnt. No one with a reasonable point of view is going to think that contraceptives should be free to those who can afford to pay for them. Its just a matter of how you put the argument. Rush made a strategic error by name calling. He didnt need to.
The left plays divide and conquer. Its one of the most effective plays in their playbook. We need to do the same. Make the point that if insurance companies have to pay for contraceptives for sexually active university students they may have to cut back on coverage for grandmas cancer therapy. Talk about whats been cut already. Show all the recent quotes that have been made about end of life care, and make the case that the left cares more about paying for the sexual activities of college students than it does about giving the elderly a chance to survive longer and see their grandchildren grow. Show the math regarding how much money it will cost insurance companies to provide free contraceptives to students who found the money somehow to pay for tuition etc.

EXCELLENT points! This is so how the left would frame the arguments if they were trying to defend OUR views on contraception.

To all you supposed Christians out there. What would Jesus have done?

Well, Jesus ultimately allowed himself to be severely beaten by his persecutors, nailed to the cross, and killed.
Are you suggesting this is what we should allow the left to do to us?
What, you don’t believe the meek will inherit the earth?

This is a critical time for us to speak truth to corruption, and Rush is our principal standard bearer.
Rush is a pillar of conservative influence, my FRiend, and the dark side seeks to weaken his cred and standing.
Watch, you will now see Alinsky-esque ridicule of our El Rushbo on an extraordinary high level.

I completely agree... The Alinsky-ites on the left will indeed ratchet up their attacks on Rush to a new extraordinary high level thanks to him issuing his unnecessary public apology which will no doubt be perceived the leftists as weakness.

So does this mean your answer to my question is “yes”?
Geez, if we’re just supposed to bow down and surrender to our persecutors, should we not even have a military then?
