McCain: Romney May Be Too Wounded to Win in November

Mitt Romney could be too wounded from the drawn-out and increasingly bitter Republican primary battle to be an effective candidate against President Barack Obama, leading supporter Sen. John McCain suggests.

And the GOP’s 2008 presidential candidate called on all four candidates left in the race to tone down the intra-party attacks and concentrate on policies.

“This is like watching a Greek tragedy,” McCain told the Boston Herald, saying that negative campaigning and increasingly personal attacks “should have stopped long ago.”

“Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now it’s just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks,” said the senior senator from Arizona, one of two states with primaries today.

McCain endorsed Romney in early January and says he remains convinced that his man will win the nomination. “I know he’s going to be the nominee, but I also worry about how much damage has been done,” McCain said. “Once we get this over, the more we’ll be focused on Obama’s failures.”

McCain said the current campaign is far worse than the bitter 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton. “That was nothing compared to this,” he said. “The worst you got then was, ‘What are you going to do if you get that phone call at 3 in morning? Compare that to ‘Massachusetts liberal’ and “Romneycare’ . . . These people are not respectful.”

I despise Romney more because McCain served our country, has always been pro-life and he’s not a lawyer.

McCain would have an unholy cow were Sarah Palin to be our nominee!

He is so jealous of her.

Remember Palin’s frustration when McCain did the same in ‘08?

Good points. I still despise him and his fat, loudmouthed daughter, though. :)

*****************************

It must really, really annoy him that her popularity has only increased since 2008.

Yep. She made it clear that she wanted to come here and run but the GOP is too busy taking the easy route. The last republican with the stones to Run here was Reagan and it paid off big time.

I don't know what happened to John McCain but he was a realible foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. Where was Mitt Romney then? Changing his party affilitation to independent. So, at best, Mitt Romney was AWOL during the Reagan Revolution and more likely, on the other side (at least that was what he was implying during his Senate campaign with Ted Kennedy).

In terms of conservatism, Mitt Romney is more Nelson Rockefeller than Gerald Ford. In other words, Mitt Romney doesn't even register on a conservative scale. That should be a frightening thought to a true Reaganite.

McCain is already manufacturing cheap excuses for his RINO buddy.

Mitt Romney would have been damaged goods if he’d lost in Michigan. As it its, he’s a viable candidate and perhaps the front-runner. But his claims of electability are damaged.

McCain is definitely no friend of conservatives, but he has made a few statements in the last few days that may indicate that, for one reason or another, he’s seeking to adopt a more conservative persona.

Who knows why? It probably won’t last in any case.

a delegate tie ‘’win’’ split isn’t a win ... as Rush repeatedly stressed today ... for those in Rio Linda ... Mitt should be maxed-out on Prozac at this point ... he can’t win ... and he’s pissing away millions in the lost effort ... I absolutely love it ...
