Mitt Romney could be too wounded from the drawn-out and increasingly bitter Republican primary battle to be an effective candidate against President Barack Obama, leading supporter Sen. John McCain suggests.
And the GOPs 2008 presidential candidate called on all four candidates left in the race to tone down the intra-party attacks and concentrate on policies.
This is like watching a Greek tragedy, McCain told the Boston Herald, saying that negative campaigning and increasingly personal attacks should have stopped long ago.
Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now its just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks, said the senior senator from Arizona, one of two states with primaries today.
McCain endorsed Romney in early January and says he remains convinced that his man will win the nomination. I know hes going to be the nominee, but I also worry about how much damage has been done, McCain said. Once we get this over, the more well be focused on Obamas failures.
McCain said the current campaign is far worse than the bitter 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton. That was nothing compared to this, he said. The worst you got then was, What are you going to do if you get that phone call at 3 in morning? Compare that to Massachusetts liberal and Romneycare . . . These people are not respectful.

Damn you John McCain!
Where were you when Romney first used his vicious attacks on Newt Gingrich?
You know, the same type of vicious, smearing attacks ads that he used on you?
I’ll tell you where you were!
You were endorsing and campaigning with the vicious pro-abortion, anti-gun, lying lawyer, liberal!
McCain: Romney May Be Too Wounded to Win in November
Romnay was NEVER going to win in November. That he could have was just the spin driven by the media to help Obama..
Pretty much agree - there’s a method to this madness. McCain IMHO has been sent out to deliver a message, lowering expectation and reserving the possibility that Jeb Bush or someone might have to be brought in at a brokered convention. I think he’s just been told to intentionally leak some of the strategery of the Wizards of Smart who will determine who the candidate will be ;-)
Garand-damn-teed they are not thinking it would ever be “You-know-who”, least of all McLame.
bingo.
But always remember that we don’t have to be afraid of Obama. Still pimping for Hussein, huh, McRino?
“Moderates” only become interested in the tone of a campaign when they’re in trouble.
Newt has his problems but why would you wish that on him?
Exactly so!!!!
Please. Someone, somewhere, sew this moron’s mouth shut.
I am fed up with McCain. He’s despicable.
Does that not say that this nation is center left?
Reason number 9,062 why RINOs are absolutely useless.
I have an idea. Let’s take electoral advice from a washed up old loser who hates conservatives and never misses an opportunity to trash us.
Romney is just too moderate to wi - just like you, Juan.
Endorsing Romney after the way Romney treated him was a huge act in and of utter stupidity.
Now he’s worried and whining to a reporter?
ROTFLMYMcCainOFF.
I’m thrilled Romney is “severely” damaged goods, because he sure made sure that he damaged Newt Gingrich when he was running away with the election ON ALL POSITIVE AND ENLIGHTENING, SOLID SOLUTIONS!
Can’t stand McCain, but couldn’t agree more. Well, it isn’t that Romney is wounded, it’s that he is a TERRIBLE candidate and will get his clock cleaned come November.
