Mitt Romney could be too wounded from the drawn-out and increasingly bitter Republican primary battle to be an effective candidate against President Barack Obama, leading supporter Sen. John McCain suggests.
And the GOPs 2008 presidential candidate called on all four candidates left in the race to tone down the intra-party attacks and concentrate on policies.
This is like watching a Greek tragedy, McCain told the Boston Herald, saying that negative campaigning and increasingly personal attacks should have stopped long ago.
Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now its just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks, said the senior senator from Arizona, one of two states with primaries today.
McCain endorsed Romney in early January and says he remains convinced that his man will win the nomination. I know hes going to be the nominee, but I also worry about how much damage has been done, McCain said. Once we get this over, the more well be focused on Obamas failures.
McCain said the current campaign is far worse than the bitter 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton. That was nothing compared to this, he said. The worst you got then was, What are you going to do if you get that phone call at 3 in morning? Compare that to Massachusetts liberal and Romneycare . . . These people are not respectful.

I agree, John- now would you please endorse Little Ricky?
Neither Romney nor Saintorum will effective candidates against Barack Obama.
As for McCain.... I am loving this. McCain has always been a worthless backstabber, but on this occasion it is just hilarious.
** President Newt Gingrich-”Our beloved republic deserves nothing less.”
The RINOs are already starting to blame the tea party for their RINO nominee losing next November.
Nobody’s giving Romney the finger.
I don’t agree with McCain that the bitter campaign will hurt the GOP nominee in November. But I do believe it is horrifying that the likely nominee has already “given over” the SIGNATURE issue vs. Obama, namely ObamaCare. Romney can still win, due to the crumbling economy, but he will do it without the support of many strong conservatives.
Juan must not have been getting enough MSM attention lately. Had to say something to get a little ink and airtime.
Michigan was ceded to Obama last night when he won in Obama’s stronghold Detroit and Santorum won everywhere else.
I saw Ed Rollins on the news this morning saying that its unlikely that Romney will even compete here. We were just his drunken prom date. He got what he wanted and he’s done with us now
BREAKING NEWS:
I am John McCain and I now endorse Little Ricky... err, I mean Rick Santorum, even though JFK’s speech made him “want to throw up”.
He is too liberal to win in November.
McCain also wants to arm Islamics. He is no friend of conservatives.
The only tingle up the leg McCain was capable of generating, was actually an urge to take a whiz on top of his head.
McQweeg you had an EASY Nomination and didn’t win in november against a complete unknown. Loser!
McQweeg you had an EASY Nomination and didn’t win in November against a complete unknown. Loser!
On the other hand, McCain is an incompetent, dimwitted, fool with a fat, loudmouthed daughter.
So difficult to choose which one I despise more.
"Dole was defeated, as pundits had long expected, by Bill Clinton in the 1996 election. Clinton won in a 379-159 Electoral College landslide, capturing 49.2% of the vote against Dole's 40.7% and Ross Perot's 8.4% who drew equally from both candidates.
Dole is the only person in the history of the two major U.S. political parties to have been his party's nominee for both President and Vice President, but who was never elected to either office."
No toning down John-O!. Tear Romney apart, and go into the convention for a brokered solution, nominate Sarah Palin.
Romney should win handily.
