Mitt Romney could be too wounded from the drawn-out and increasingly bitter Republican primary battle to be an effective candidate against President Barack Obama, leading supporter Sen. John McCain suggests.
And the GOPs 2008 presidential candidate called on all four candidates left in the race to tone down the intra-party attacks and concentrate on policies.
This is like watching a Greek tragedy, McCain told the Boston Herald, saying that negative campaigning and increasingly personal attacks should have stopped long ago.
Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now its just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks, said the senior senator from Arizona, one of two states with primaries today.
McCain endorsed Romney in early January and says he remains convinced that his man will win the nomination. I know hes going to be the nominee, but I also worry about how much damage has been done, McCain said. Once we get this over, the more well be focused on Obamas failures.
McCain said the current campaign is far worse than the bitter 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton. That was nothing compared to this, he said. The worst you got then was, What are you going to do if you get that phone call at 3 in morning? Compare that to Massachusetts liberal and Romneycare . . . These people are not respectful.

Great, John. Will you endorse Newt then??
Who are ‘these people’? Voters????? Criticizing Romneycare is disrespectful?
Poor McCain - he is beyond help.
McCain, a loser picking his loser successor.
live by the sword, die by the sword.
John, even a “wounded” Mittens is more viable than you were, you dried-up old dog turd.
Translation, if we lose its those evil conservative’s fault, not us RINO’s.
I love it, just love it. Another RINO nominee will join the ranks of Ford, Dole, Bush Sr., and McCain as a loser. Yet, the establishment will continue to rationalize away the fact that their chosen candidates lack the ability to win. Oh no, its not that these country clubber, ruling class morons sucked. It is the fact that somehow it was the fault of those evil conservatives. Insert some RINO gabalteegook about Goldwater here. Yep, we had one conservative candidate lose in a landslide to their soon to be 5 losers. Oh, and just pretend Reagan away and/or revise history by calling him a moderate.
That's is like saying hitting someone with a pillow will make them too weak to go up against someone armed with a knife and a baseball bat. If Romney is too wounded from the questioning he is getting now, wait until he gets slammed by the MSM/Democrat attack machine.
Romney has simply been asked to explain his record and his positions. McCain thinks that leaves him “wounded”. The people who have been viciously attacked by the MSM are Bachmann, Newt and Santorum. Except for a few unfair allegations, Romney has for the most part been left alone.
Or maybe McCain wanted the Republicans to lose all along. And he is just trying to help Obama.
Just switch parties, Ace.
Wow. What a stab in the back. Wasn’t McCain praising him just last night.
Well it was McCain’s boy that started it/continued it/and will undoubtedly finish it. Romney has destroyed the entire process with his vicious tactics and we may have to find someone new just to survive.
Very strange. McCain has made a number of almost conservative statements in the last week or so. Maybe he’s getting ready to mend his ways in his old age?
That said, this may be an indication that GOP central has finally acknowledged that Romney is simply not a likeable or winning candidate. McCain was actually a little more likeable (or at least one felt sorry for him), although I never felt he could win because he simply didn’t have the ideas or the feeling of future that a candidate needs in order to win.
The only candidate, in my opinion, who has a sense of future is Gingrich. While Obama has a totally detestable vision of our future, the thing that allowed him to win was this vague “hope and change” slogan, which made people think he had a vision of the future.
Palin had one, McCain didn’t. But maybe he’s suddenly realizing that this was what was lacking.
Just McCain trying to pitch his Campaign Finance Reform ideas again
Too wounded my ass!!
0bama is the better socialist liberal is the reason.
These RINO hacks are as sickening as the liberal hacks in their political ways.
Too late now McCain: Romney drew blood first-and now he’s going to lOSE just like you, ya loser!~
So Romney is too wounded to win in November? Is that because Obambi is strong? Or is it because so little effort shall be put into carrying the fight to him, that Obambi wins not because he is the better candidate for the job, but because nobody else cares enough?
You puttin’ me on, John. A LOT of people care, and care in ways that have not yet been acknowledged. Obamai is not merely incompetent, he is openly hostile and malovent toward America. He insists on applying a command economy to America, a business model that rarely works anywhere, and certainly is not working here. When the Chinese Communists are cautioning Obambi to steer away from his present course, then that should be more than enough warning that merely wrenching from ditch to opposite ditch along some wretched little goat-path is no way to navigate the highway of life.
First you have to get back to the main road.
McCain is not going to "mend his ways," and he is not going to intentionally undermine Romney.
Make no mistake, moderates and RINOs are lying manipulative scum. When a conservative candidate wins a primary in “their” party they will will happily toss an election to the democrats just to say “we told you so”.
That’s probably true.
The only person who benefits from the cancellation of all debates is Romney (well, Santorum, who is also foot-in-mouth challenged, also benefits).
What all of the GOP establishment is desperate to prevent is a debate on ideas.
John McCain was the worst possible pick by GOP in 100 years.
He was old, he is short, he was fat, he was bald, he was ugly. Worst of all he is a maverick who craves attention by the MSM. I can’t think of a worst possible pick against a tall, lean, youthful, smooth talking community organizer capable of creating tingle up the legs of many in media.
