McCain's remarks aim for two objectives. One being to justify Romney's refusal to participate in any more debates, the other being to justify Romney's loss to Obama in the general.

McCain is not going to "mend his ways," and he is not going to intentionally undermine Romney.

That’s probably true.

The only person who benefits from the cancellation of all debates is Romney (well, Santorum, who is also foot-in-mouth challenged, also benefits).

What all of the GOP establishment is desperate to prevent is a debate on ideas.

Pretty much agree - there’s a method to this madness. McCain IMHO has been sent out to deliver a message, lowering expectation and reserving the possibility that Jeb Bush or someone might have to be brought in at a brokered convention. I think he’s just been told to intentionally leak some of the strategery of the Wizards of Smart who will determine who the candidate will be ;-)

Garand-damn-teed they are not thinking it would ever be “You-know-who”, least of all McLame.
