Ive been showcasing the various members of the Brill Building group that filled the airwaves in the Fifties and Sixties. (Drumbo did a brilliant job with Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller last year, so I wont attempt to duplicate his work.) This week, its the
Jeff Barry Songbook.
Jeff Barry started out as Joel Adelberg, a kid born into a Jewish working class family who grew up in New York and New Jersey. Although he had written songs since he was a small boy, he never thought of himself as a songwriter. After graduating high school and serving a hitch in the Army, he decided to become an engineer. Then along came the doo-wop sound, and Jeff decided to become a rock and roll singer.
He was introduced to music publisher Arnold Shaw, who got him an RCA recording contract and signed him to a publishing deal with his firm, E. B. Marks Music. Jeffs records failed, but the songs he wrote caught fire. By the summer of 1960, he had teamed with Ben Raleigh for a Ray Peterson tune. The size of the royalty checks shocked him, and he couldnt believe he was getting that kind of money for something he considered a hobby. This song was one of the great weepers of the era, a true three-handkerchief song.

Watcha spinning this evening?
I'm open to sugestions. I've had a head cold all week and haven't done much besides sleep it off. I meant to rise this afternoon and plan a set, but alas, I just awoke at half-past O'Reilly and I'm a blank slate.

Jeff Barry spent the next two years taking the subway around Manhattan to record demos and display his songs. Jeff had married, but now, somewhat inconveniently, he met a lively Jewish blonde at a Thanksgiving dinner. Ellie Greenwich was a songwriter and a good singer. Splitting from his first wife, Jeff and Ellie spent their dates harmonizing to popular songs, practicing the piano, and talking in depth about music.
By 1961, Jeff had left Marks to go to Trinity Music. Ellie had her own ideas. Rather than join Jeff at Trinity, she landed a job with Trio Music, owned and operated by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This was to change music history.
In 1962, Jeff teamed with Cliff Crawford and Artie Resnick to write a song that Gene McDaniels took to the Top 10.

In October 1962, Ellie teamed with Phil Spector, a Leiber & Stoller protégé, who had started his own label. Neither Jeff nor Ellie was pulling in the steady income they desired. Jeff Barry was writing weak material with Resnick, and Ellie Greenwich was doing the same with Tony Powers. Only after they got married did they finally hit upon the idea of writing as a team. Leiber and Stoller brought Ellies new husband into Trio.
Ellie introduced Jeff to Spector. Lala Brooks, the new lead singer of the Crystals, needed something to showcase her vocal chops, and the threesome obliged.

Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were now a hot team, and there was a growing demand for their songs. Said Ellie: At one point in 1963, Jeff and I looked, and we saw that we had seven songs in the Top Twenty. We thought, Oh ... my ... God! The two of them, along with Phil Spector, had turned Philles Records into a cash cow. They created something just as exciting for the Crystals in their next outing.
This is the quintessential Spector Wall of Sound recording. Note the use of a string section.

If you have spent any time watching network TV in Southern California over the past four decades, you have probably heard this song.
