By late 1964, cracks began appearing in Jeff Barrys and Ellie Greenwichs marriage. Jeffs roving eye had led to other parts of his body roving as well. Writing together was easy, but living together proved increasingly difficult. At Red-Bird, time was running out. Before they knew it, all the labels artists had defected, and Leiber and Stoller had sold out. Red-Bird was history, and so was their marriage.
Their professional split was headed off by Phil Spector, who reunited them in 1966 to pen material for his latest signing, Ike & Tina Turner. Ellie Greenwich would continue to co-produce artists with Jeff Barry through the spring of 1968, but with increasing frequency, he began to take on solo projects. The few songs he and Ellie wrote during this period werent collaborations so much as totally independent ideas fused together. Their song writing partnership was over.
This single was a hit in the UK, but not here. It took four years before an amalgam of groups from Motown made this song a success.

One tune written years earlier by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich ended up providing Tommy James & the Shondells with a major hit in 1966, even if James had to create another group with the same name to fulfill his recording contract with Mafia-owned Roulette Records. (We used to sing, My baby rubs it with a hanky.)

Neil Diamond was one of the last artists produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. He has to qualify as their most successful artist, given his stellar recording career. Neils music opened the door to Jeffs subsequent work, as Jeff took several Neil Diamond songs to Donny Kirshner, who placed them with the Monkees and hired Jeff to produce.
But by February 1967, both the Monkees and the producers of their TV show wanted no more to do with Kirshner or his people. For a time, the Monkees success continued with the group members producing themselves, but by 1969 their star had gone into free fall. Fortunately, Jeff had maintained good relations with Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones, and they allowed him back to supervise what turned out to be the last album, which failed to find an audience.
Jeff began seeking out projects he could tackle either on his own or in collaboration with other producers. Jeff appeared as a session musician and singer on Van Morrisons 1967 debut album Blowin Your Mind! Its actually Barry, not Morrison, who sings the famous sha-la-la fade on the hit single Brown-Eyed Girl. The most significant project Jeff undertook during this period was undoubtedly the founding of his own record label. After inking a distribution deal with Hollywood-based Dot Records in April 1967, he opened a recording studio and set up administrative offices for Steed Records in Manhattan.
The man who would become Steeds most successful singer now got his turn at bat. Andy Kim, a Canadian of Lebanese extraction, tried his luck on the New York music scene. After casting about for a few years, he hooked up with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich in 1965 for a solitary Red-Bird release. When the single flopped, no one could have predicted that Andy would replace Ellie as Jeffs song writing partner.

The Archies is where it all came together for Jeff Barry. When Donny Kirshner asked him to produce this cartoon studio group, Jeff was up to his neck in work at Steed. But he couldnt resist the opportunity and made time in his schedule for an initial two week writing and recording session in July 1968. Little did he suspect that hed return to provide two more seasons worth of original material. The soundtrack for The Archie Show featured Toni Wine, Bobby Bloom and Jeff Barry on backing vocals, with Ron Dante on lead. He stopped producing the group after Paramount Pictures hired him to work in its music division.
This is where Jeff Barry and Andy Kim rang the cash register. This song made millions for the guys and was the top selling single of 1969. Its actually a great tune, as catchy as they come, and it deserves respect.

I finally made it home....was in an accident on my own street. A young man pulled out of a parking lot RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. There was no stopping on an icy street. *sigh*
We have so much snow that you cannot see around the berms. He said he saw the car behind me, but not me. He said he is house sitting and was driving their Lexus....I hit mainly right where the driver’s door starts. We are both drivable, but I have no right side lights or turn signals. I will not be driving mine for awhile except to get a couple estimates somewhere. Thank you God that we have the suburban to drive. Tentatively we will keep the insurance companies out of it. He called his Mom and we talked. He took pictures of my info and I had him read me his. Then his Mom came and we chatted some more.
I wish I had a hot tub...I would be in it! I can feel stiffness starting. A hot shower will have to do. My seat belt has left its mark...the next few mornings will be interesting.

The work that Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector had done three years earlier paid off handsomely with a hit from an unexpected source in 1969. The tune written for the Ronettes became a hit for the Beach Boys. Note the absence of Brian Wilson, as brother Carl handles lead vocal duties.

Oh my goodness.
Thank the Lord you weren’t significantly injured.
Hot shower would be tempting but this soon it will worsen bruising.. Ice first...then heat later.

A Ronettes tune that Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector had written six years earlier gave Andy Kim a huge hit in 1969.
