Who Is the Mystery Food Monitor?
No agency has said it employed the person checking preschoolers' lunch bags
By Rick Henderson
Feb. 16th, 2012

RALEIGH — Three days after a Carolina Journal report on the plight of a 4-year-old preschooler and her lunch made national headlines, the identity of the person who determined that the youngster's homemade lunch was not nutritious remains unknown.

Of the several government agencies who have been named in the controversy — the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Division of Child Development and Early Education at the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Hoke County schools, and the FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — none will admit that it was responsible for employing or contracting with the person who was inspecting preschoolers’ lunches at West Hoke Elementary School in late January.

In the initial story published Feb. 14, CJ Associate Editor Sara Burrows reported that a preschooler at West Hoke was notified by someone at the school that the lunch she brought from home — a turkey sandwich with cheese on white whole wheat bread, a banana, a bag of chips, and a container of apple juice — did not meet USDA guidelines for nutritious meals.

• USDA spokesman Bruce Alexander said the person monitoring the lunches was a “North Carolina education staff member” [sic] reviewing the facility.

Well, does he or she have a name?

...white whole wheat bread...

Why do we have to drag the bread's race into this?

Every government agency denies sending anyone there, so who is person? Could it be that this person is a illegal intruder into the school masquerading as a government agent??

Unless I'm reading it wrong, a follow-up email from DHHS seems to suggest it is one of their employees:

Your request for public records ha been received [sic], as soon as the full report from the Consultants visit is available we will make it available to you...

DHHS says the person monitoring the lunches was not employed by the agency. In a statement (PDF), the agency said it is not department “policy to inspect, go through or question any child about food items brought from home. The facts we have gathered confirm that no DHHS employee or contractor did this.”

Just reading they deny all involvement.

And school lunch stories continue to pop! In Magadore, Ohio, near Akron, a student was told she could not eat her sub sandwich, because it was “better” than other student’s lunches, and she might embarrass them!

Yeah, I know. I read the article too, but they seem to suggest, in that email, that they know something. At least that's how I read it. Either this consultant was the person, or he knows who the person is seems to be suggested. They're going to initially deny an embarrassing situation like this anyway. Try to take the sting out of the moment, if you will. Then, when they have their story choreographed for public consumption, they'll walk out a report like it's no big deal.

Exactly correct. Everyone is trying to get their stories straight. The explanation will be given at some obscure moment and they’ll go on their way.

OR, the guilty parties will float the idea the little girl made the story up just to get someone in trouble.

"The facts we have gathered confirm that no DHHS employee or contractor did this.”

There's a difference between a consultant and a contractor. DHHS did not say that no consultant did this. So, it sounds to me as if the problem individual would be associated with FPG Child Development Institute.

Dumb bureaucrat bastards stirred up a s**t storm when this went national and now everybody is running for cover.

Find the jerk or jerkette, fire him/her, fire his boss, fire his boss, fire his boss, on up the line until you have no one left to fire.
The country will be better off and saving lots of money.

It seems that taking a look at Germany in the 1930s is kind of taboo these days, but, I believe people need to take a look. The parallels between what is coming out of our States today and Washington D.C. and their agencies is very comparable to Germany then as is the American passive response to the insanity. I am currently reading IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS: LOVE, TERROR, AND AN AMERICAN FAMILY IN HITLER’S BERLIN. This book depicts the flaws in human nature which cause people to turn their heads from evil until evil takes over.
