The elections committee in the Kansas House just passed a an eligibility bill requiring state and federal candidates to show a certified copy of their birth certificate as proof of citizenship. This coincides with a similar effort in Kansas on voter identification.
"A House committee approved a bill Wednesday requiring candidates for state and federal office to provide proof of citizenship, a reflection of the "birther" movement raising questions of President Barack Obama's status as a U.S. citizen."

"The objective of the bill, he said, should be to require proof of citizenship for state and federal candidates because Kansas is requiring the same scrutiny of voters.
"We ought to require proof of citizenship to run," Rubin said."

"Rep. Scott Schwab, an Olathe Republican and chairman of the House Elections Committee, said origin of House Bill 2224 was tied to anxiety about Obama's birth status."
I read it. From the "article": "Politicians and conspiracy theorists, sometimes referred to as birthers, have sought to disqualify Obama from running for president, being sworn into office and running for re-election. They have claimed Obama isn't a natural-born citizen and consequently ineligible to be president."
No one is trying to "disqualify" Mr. "Obama" from anything. They're asking him to demonstrate that he is qualified. Big difference. "In 2008, Obama released documents from Hawaii regarding his birth. He also released last year a certified copy of his original certificate of live birth from Hawaii.
Funny, I must've missed the part where "Obama" displayed anything other than online images of his so-called "documents".
It's a Journ-O-List type opinion piece masquerading as a "news" story. And if the intellectual firepower on display in the comments section is any indication of the sentiments of the average Kansan, then it's going to be an uphill climb, to put it mildly.
"We ought to require proof of citizenship to run," Rubin said.
someone needs to correct these people. maybe, just maybe, they should actually READ the requirements of eligibility
being citizen is not enough.
any candidates should provide proof of being a NATURAL BORN citizen. anything less is worthless
It’s not a perfect bill, but it’s a step in the right direction. This bill applies to both state and federal offices, so they may have elected not to get too specific. Only the president would be required to be natural-born. Of course, the current occupant has NEVER provided a certified copy of his birth certificate to any state as proof of citizenship, so this bill would most likely keep him off the ballot. And, ideally, there would be a way to challenge a candidate who doesn’t meet other Constitutional requirements other than this citizenship verification. The important thing is to get Kansans to support the bill and make sure it is passed. Hopefully Brownback would sign it.
Previous eligibility bills ahve been an “uphill climb” in other states. It’s rare they get to this point. Kansas has a strong blue state tradition and this is coupled with a voter ID bill, so there appears to be a strong sentiment behind it.
I noted that as well. Tying it to the valid argument that candidates should have to demonstrate citizenship just as voters should have to would seem to be a winning argument. I just find myself feeling jaded on the odds of our elected representatives of any state passing "proofer" legislation of any kind, particularly after the debacle in Arizona.
That said, if the bill were to succeed, simply requiring the Illegal Alien in Chief to produce a valid document demonstrating any kind of US citizenship at all would probably cause him to bail from the process entirely.
Good on Kansas! That is the Constitutional way to handle the issue, through the political process.
Federal courts have enough illegitimate power as it is. We do not want to establish a precedent of federal judges deciding who to leave or kick off Presidential ballots.
Obama simply submits his short-form COLB and that will be that.
The one with the fake seal?
Correct. He just needs to show his US short form and keep his Indonesian and Kenyan passports tucked away in the closet. Oh yes, and stop publicly stating that Kenya is his home country.
A Kenyan citizen has to show his US BC to get elected. What kind of country treats Kenyans like this? His Indonesian sister and Kenyan brother must be so embarrassed at how he's being treated.
You will need people on Facebook and twitter. People love videos, perhaps a little video on the bill would be very helpful. Call in to the talk shows. Signs on cars.
You need people who will volunteer.
As long as Hawaiian state officials vouch for it (as they have) Kansas will accept it.
If a Sheriff vouches for their authenticity, could he use his Indonesian or Kenyan passport?
Which one?
As long as Hawaiian state officials vouch for it (as they have) Kansas will accept it.
You mean those same officials who have previously stated that “it is written down in the State archives” or “it is half hand written and half type written? LOL!
The Kenyan coward has never submitted ANY of his alleged COLB or LFBCs to any official legal body. There’s a good reason why he’s too skeered to do so.
